About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Senior WordPress Developer with a strong background in building and maintaining high-traffic websites for media and digital publishing companies. The ideal candidate combines deep WordPress expertise with modern front-end development skills (React) and hands-on experience integrating subscription, paywall, and payment platforms such as Piano and Stripe.

You will play a key role in developing, customizing, and scaling content-driven platforms, ensuring performance, reliability, and seamless monetization experiences for our clients.

Role & responsibilities

- Design, develop, and maintain WordPress-based websites and applications for media/publishing clients, including custom themes and plugins.
- Build and customize front-end components and interactive experiences using React (including headless WordPress / REST API / WPGraphQL implementations where required).
- Implement and manage Piano integrations for paywalls, subscriptions, metering, and audience segmentation.
- Integrate and maintain Stripe for payment processing, recurring billing, and subscription management workflows.
- Optimize websites for performance, scalability, Core Web Vitals, and SEO critical for high-traffic media environments.
- Work with editorial and content teams to support custom post types, taxonomies, editorial workflows, and Gutenberg block development.
- Ensure website security, manage updates, and implement best practices for hardening WordPress installations.
- Collaborate with designers, product managers, and QA to deliver pixel-perfect, responsive, cross-browser-compatible experiences.

Required Skills & Qualifications

- 5+ years of qualified WordPress development experience, with demonstrable work for media, news, or digital publishing companies.
- Strong proficiency in PHP, MySQL, JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5, CSS3/SASS and React.
- Hands-on experience with React for front-end customization, custom Gutenberg blocks, or headless WordPress architectures.
- Proven experience integrating Piano (paywall/subscription platform) with WordPress.
- Proven experience integrating Stripe (payments, subscriptions, webhooks) with WordPress.
- Solid understanding of the WordPress ecosystem: hooks, filters, REST API, custom post types, ACF, multisite.
- Experience with caching, CDNs, and performance optimization for high-traffic websites (e.g., Cloudflare, Varnish, Redis, WP Rocket).
- Familiarity with Git-based workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and staging/production deployment processes.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills across full-stack environments.
- Good communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional and client-facing teams.

Nice to Have

- Experience with headless CMS setups (Next.js + WordPress).
- Familiarity with other subscription/monetization platforms (e.g., Zephr, Recurly, Chargebee).
- Knowledge of analytics and audience tools commonly used in media (GA4, Google Tag Manager, Piano Analytics).
- Experience with AMP, structured data/schema markup, and SEO tooling for publishers.
- Exposure to AWS/Azure hosting environments, Docker, or managed WordPress platforms (WP Engine, Pantheon, Kinsta).
- Understanding of GDPR/consent management as applicable to media websites.
