ABOUT NAAFLS

NAAFLS is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) and independent Family Violence Prevention Legal Service (FVPLS).

We are the only victim-based Aboriginal legal service in remote communities in the Top End region of the NT.

We have offices in Darwin (Larrakia land), Katherine (Jawoyn, Dagoman and Wardaman land) and Nhulunbuy (Yolŋu land), and service over 40 remote communities within the Top End region spanning from the Tiwi Islands down to Lajamanu, Wadeye across to Borroloola. We provide culturally sensitive legal advice, assistance, representation, and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Top End communities who have experienced domestic, family, and sexual violence.

We offer a holistic and culturally appropriate model of service which sets us apart; seeking practical community-based solutions to the most complex legal problems.

Our primary practice areas are family law, child protection, and domestic violence; though we frequently intervene in coronial inquiries, parliamentary inquiries, and other administrative or criminal proceedings as required.

ABOUT THE MIYALK SHELTER

The Miyalk Domestic and Family Violence Shelter (Miyalk Shelter) operates 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide culturally safe,



trauma-informed crisis and short-term accommodation and support for women and their children at risk of or experiencing Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) in Nhulunbuy and surrounding communities. Miyalk Shelter offers safe and supported accommodation, case management, advocacy, children and parenting support, and outreach through holistic, strengths-based practice.

ROLE OVERVIEW

The Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Children’s Specialist Educator will deliver quality child-focused interventions that are culturally safe, trauma-informed, and child-centred, to support Yolŋu children and young people affected by family and domestic violence. Reporting to the Crisis Accommodation Team Leader and, working alongside the Children and Parenting Support (CaPS) Outreach programs, this role works with clients 0-18 years of age across all programs, supporting children’s safety, social and emotional wellbeing, cultural identity, and developmental needs. Working within a strengths-based framework, the position recognises the central role of and connection to family, kinship, culture and country in healing and resilience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Apply trauma-informed and culturally responsive healing-oriented approaches to support to Yolŋu children impacted by violence, displacement, grief, and loss.

- Develop and facilitate culturally and developmentally appropriate, safe and engaging activities that support emotional regulation, coping skills and resilience. This includes 1:1 or group programs that encourage play, creativity, learning, social connection and emotional wellbeing.

- Promote international and national child safe principles to assist children to feel safe and settled in crisis accommodation; and that supports children’s voice, choice and agency, integrating child-focused perspectives and a continuity of care in the community.

- Work collaboratively with Support Workers, families, Elders, and cultural advisors to deliver services respectful of Yolŋu culture, kinship systems, and community protocols.

- Provide guidance on child development and trauma responses and support caregiver–child attachment and positive relationships; and support children’s connection to culture, language, and integrate culturally safe communication and behaviour.





- Work alongside mothers and caregivers to strengthen parenting confidence, including assisting families to engage with schools and community services.

- Advocate and monitor children’s safety, education and wellbeing needs. Actively participate in risk assessment and safety planning, including facilitating referrals to health, counselling, education, and specialist supports.

- Within a therapeutic framework, work with team members and protective caregivers to follow mandatory reporting obligations.

- Actively engage in regular meetings, ensuring case progress and compliance with NAAFLS’ policies and procedures.

- Contribute to the day-to-day operations of the shelter and practicalities of communal living as an active member of the Miyalk Shelter team ensuring the safety, security and welcoming shelter environment.

- Engage in ongoing professional development and training.

- Undertake other duties as reasonably directed.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

- Minimum Certificate III in Community Services, Early Childhood, Education or related field, and 2 year’s experience working with children, young people, or families in vulnerable or crisis contexts.

- Demonstrated understanding of family and domestic violence and its impact on children.

- Deep knowledge about child development and trauma-informed care, with the ability to engage effectively with children and families in crisis.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and an ability to work calmly, flexibly, and collaboratively within a team environment.

- Sound skills in problem-solving, adaptability, professional boundaries and ethical practice.

- Commitment to strengths-based and culturally protected practice, including respect for Yolŋu culture and kinship systems.

- Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with Yolŋu children and families, and a willingness to learn and work within Yolŋu ways of knowing, being, and doing.

- Must obtain and keep a current Working with Children Clearance (WWCC) and a satisfactory national Criminal History Check.

- Must obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification.

- Possess a current ‘C’ Class NT Drivers Licence.

Desirable

- Current experience and training in trauma-informed care, child development, or FDV environments.

- Knowledge of East Arnhem Land communities, Yolŋu language skills and/or lived cultural knowledge.

- Tertiary qualification in education, social work or a related field.
