NICU Staff Nurse (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)

Nurse Manager / Nursing Superintendent / NICU In-charge

Job Summary

The NICU Staff Nurse is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to critically ill, premature, and high-risk newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The nurse works collaboratively with neonatologists, pediatricians, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, evidence-based, and family-centered care.

Key ResponsibilitiesPatient Care

- Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill and premature neonates.
- Monitor and assess vital signs, oxygen saturation, temperature, and neurological status.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and nutrition as prescribed.
- Manage intravenous lines, umbilical catheters, PICC lines, and peripheral IVs.
- Assist in neonatal resuscitation and emergency procedures.
- Operate and monitor NICU equipment including incubators, radiant warmers, infusion pumps, syringe pumps, ventilators, CPAP, and phototherapy units.
- Maintain infection prevention and control standards.
- Ensure accurate fluid balance and feeding records.

Clinical Responsibilities

- Recognize early signs of neonatal deterioration and promptly report to the treating physician.
- Assist with intubation, central line insertion, lumbar puncture, exchange transfusion, and other neonatal procedures.
- Collect blood and other specimens as required.
- Maintain accurate nursing documentation and patient records.
- Participate in bedside rounds and multidisciplinary care planning.

Family Support

- Educate parents regarding newborn care, breastfeeding, kangaroo mother care (KMC), infection prevention, and discharge planning.
- Provide emotional support and counseling to families.
- Encourage family-centered care while maintaining patient safety.

Safety & Quality





- Follow hospital policies, clinical protocols, and nursing standards.
- Ensure medication safety and correct patient identification.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits.
- Report incidents, near misses, and adverse events according to hospital policy.

Administrative Responsibilities

- Maintain inventory of medications, consumables, and equipment.
- Ensure proper handover during shift changes.
- Participate in continuing nursing education and mandatory training.
- Support orientation and mentoring of current nursing staff.

Qualifications

- B.Sc. Nursing or GNM from a recognized institution.
- Valid Nursing Council registration.
- Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Basic Life Support (BLS) is preferred.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is an added advantage (where applicable).

Experience

- Fresh graduates may be considered for trainee positions.
- Preferred: 1–3 years of experience in NICU or Pediatric ICU.
- Experience in Level II/III NICU is desirable.

Skills & Competencies

- Knowledge of neonatal critical care.
- Competence in ventilator and CPAP management.
- Medication administration and dosage calculation for neonates.
- Excellent observation and assessment skills.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.
- Compassionate, patient-focused, and ethical practice.

Working Conditions

- Rotational shifts including day, night, weekends, and public holidays.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and respond promptly to emergencies.
- Compliance with infection control and occupational safety guidelines.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

- Compliance with nursing documentation standards.

Pay: ₹10,000.00 - ₹20,000.00 per month
