Academic counselors have many roles and responsibilities, including:

- Mentoring: Helping students achieve academic success and facilitating career selection and advancement
- Problem solving: Identifying and analyzing problems, developing potential solutions, and guiding students toward the most effective course of action
- Communication: Interacting with students, faculty, parents, and other stakeholders in a clear, effective, and empathetic manner
- Active listening: Helping clients feel heard, respected, and validated through eye contact, nodding, facial expressions, and body language
- Organizational skills: Working with multiple students simultaneously and filling and filing documents
- Knowledge of institutional policies: Being knowledgeable of institutional regulations, policies, offerings, and procedures




- Monitoring student progress: Monitoring student progress and referring students when necessary
- Organizing information sessions: Organizing information sessions
- Overseeing student adviser selection: Overseeing the student adviser selection process
- Registering students: Registering students for sections
