Job Purpose
To assist in checking proper machine functioning and ensuring SOPs being followed while operating machines in the processing shop-floor. To assist in analyzing reasons for defected finished fabric and taking corrective actions such as modification in SOPs etc. To orient workers towards any fabric processing defects or machine faults and assist in smooth worker handling.
Job Context & Major Challenges
The processing department in GPFPL has 21 machines with the maximum processing capacity of 100 lacs meters per annum. Around 73.5 lac meters of fabric is processed annually. Thus, there is under-utilization of the machines because of which the processing shop floor is operational only for 4 days in a week. However, the employees of the department have to work 6 days a week. The workers are assigned works related to cleaning and shop floor upkeep on non-production days. The supervisors are responsibe for assigning work to workers on both production and non-production days.
Over the time, the focus of the department has shifted from adherence of standard procedures to cost optimization. Since the department has the highest steam and second highest water consumption in the plant, cost optimization and minimal resource usage is the key objective. The shift supervisor needs to ensure optimal resource utilization in addition to assisting in cross-skilling of workers.
Challenges
Controlling external atmospheric factors impacting chemical and enzyme treatments
Preventing any sudden machinery breakdown while fabric is in processing phase
