About Colobbo

At Colobbo, we don't just build software we solve industry challenges. Founded by technologists and infrastructure experts with a combined 40+ years of experience, we've worked on some of the most complex telecommunications and infrastructure projects across Australia, the U.S., and Mexico. Colobbo is a geo-spatial, AI-powered workforce management platform one connected system for jobs, inspections, GIS maps and data, and progress claims. Today we're trusted by 500+ field teams across 4 countries, managing over $200M in projects on some of the largest infrastructure programs in Australia.

About the role

We're hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to co-own our Node.js API platform alongside our senior backend lead. The headline project: migrating our production Microsoft SQL Server database to PostgreSQL on AWS using DMS— schema conversion (SCT), continuous replication (CDC), data validation, application query migration, and a zero-surprise cutover. You'll plan it, run it, and own the result. Beyond the migration, you'll own backend features end-to-end, share PR review responsibility, and become a primary resource on the platform. This is a high-ownership role in a small team where your code ships to production and gets used in the field the same week.

What you'll own

- MSSQL PostgreSQL migration: schema conversion (data types, identity columns, stored procedure logic), data mapping and validation, application query migration to our ORM, and cutover planning — working with AWS DMS/SCT alongside our DevOps function
- Backend feature development: REST APIs in Node.js/Express with TypeScript and Drizzle ORM against PostgreSQL on AWS RDS
- Data layer quality: schema design, query optimization, indexing strategy, migration scripts, and data integrity across a multi-tenant SaaS
- Background processing: job queues (BullMQ/Redis), notifications, third-party integrations (SMS, email, external APIs)

- Performance and caching: Redis-based caching strategies (application and query caching, invalidation, TTL design), connection pooling, and API response optimization
- Code review and standards: share PR review ownership, enforce quality gates — static analysis, linting, coverage thresholds, and mutation testing in CI — and raise the bar on testing (Vitest) and API design
- Production support: debug real issues via Sentry and logs, own fixes end-to-end

Must-have

- 6–10 years of backend engineering at product companies — you've owned production systems, not just delivered projects
- Deep Node.js + TypeScript with Express (or similar); strong REST API design
- Strong PostgreSQL: schema design, query optimization, indexing, transactions, migrations
- Working SQL Server / T-SQL knowledge — enough to read legacy schemas and stored procedures and translate them faithfully
- Hands-on production database migration experience — you've moved live data between engines (ideally SQL Server PostgreSQL) using AWS DMS/SCT or equivalent tooling, and can talk concretely about CDC replication, validation, cutover windows, and rollback
- ORM experience (Drizzle, Prisma, TypeORM, or Knex) and understanding of when to drop to raw SQL
- Testing discipline: unit and integration tests as a default, not an afterthought
- Code quality tooling: SonarQube (or similar static analysis), ESLint, code coverage gates — you've worked in a CI pipeline that enforces quality, not just builds
- Caching experience: Redis (or Memcached) caching patterns and cache invalidation strategies
- Fluency with AI-assisted and agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar) — you use them daily as a force multiplier, and you know how to review, verify, and own the output rather than ship it blind
- Comfortable in AWS (RDS, EC2 basics, CloudWatch)

Nice-to-have

- Multi-tenant SaaS architecture; EAV or dynamic custom-field data models
- WebSockets and real-time data sync at scale
- Event-driven architecture with message queues (BullMQ, SQS, Kafka, or RabbitMQ)
- Docker and containerised deployment
- Python for scripting, data validation, or migration tooling
- Elasticsearch / OpenSearch
- Angular or Ionic familiarity (our frontend/mobile stack) — for tracing issues across the stack
- Experience with agentic development workflows: coding agents running in CI, automated PR review, MCP-based tool integrations, or agent-driven test generation

What good looks like in 90 days

- Migration plan for SQL Server PostgreSQL approved: schema map, validation approach, cutover and rollback strategy
- First tables migrated and validated in a non-production setting
- Shipping backend features independently and reviewing PRs
- The team no longer has a single point of failure on the backend

Why join Colobbo

- Own the platform end-to-end. Small, hands-on team reporting directly to the founders — your impact is direct and visible.
- Real-world impact at scale. Your code powers some of the largest infrastructure projects in Australia — NBN rollouts, telecommunications, utilities, and major construction programs.
- Fully remote, flexible hours with AEST overlap.
- Onshore travel opportunities to Australia (Melbourne HQ) for planning, team, and client engagements.
- Performance bonus, strong annual raises, and ESOP options — share in the upside you help build.
- Modern stack, agentic-first engineering. TypeScript, Drizzle, PostgreSQL, AWS — with AI code review on every PR, coding agents in CI, and quality gates including mutation testing. You'll work the way the best teams will work in two years, today.

How we'll assess you

- Walk us through a database migration or major schema change you personally executed in production — what broke, how you validated data integrity, and how you handled cutover
- Describe the production system you owned longest and one query-performance problem you solved on it (before/after, with numbers)
- Whiteboard: translating a SQL Server stored procedure with identity columns and temp tables into a PostgreSQL + application-layer equivalent
- Review a real pull request and tell us what's wrong with it
