About the Role:
We are seeking a Design Manager to head the Design & Drafting department and own the technical heart of our automation business. This is a senior, hands-on engineering leadership role responsible for the concept, feasibility, quality, and manufacturability of every solution we propose and build from robotic assembly cells and special-purpose machines to high-speed assembly lines and end-of-line testers. You will set design standards, mentor the engineering team, anchor RFQ feasibility during pre-sales, and ensure clean, accurate, on-time release of designs into procurement and execution. In a market where conversion depends on getting cycle time, cost, and feasibility right the first time, this role is decisive to HHG’s competitiveness.
Job Summary:
To lead the Design & Drafting function across pre-sales and execution — developing conceptual designs, feasibility studies, and detailed engineering for automation and robotics systems — while building departmental capability, design standards, throughput, and a reusable engineering knowledge base that improves speed, quality, and cost.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Department Leadership & People Management:
- Head the Design & Drafting department; plan, allocate, and prioritize design workload across design engineers and draughtsmen against project milestones.
- Set and govern design standards, design-review gates, calculation methods, and drawing/release quality checkpoints.
- Own design throughput and on-time release of layouts, manufacturing drawings, and BOMs to Purchase and Projects.
- Mentor and develop the team; build competency matrices, conduct design reviews, and drive continuous skill upgrades.
- Build and maintain a design library, standard-component catalogue, and reusable templates to cut design lead time and improve consistency.
2. Pre-Sales & Solution Engineering:
- Act as the senior technical authority supporting Sales and Business Development during customer engagements, RFQ feasibility, and solution definition.
- Translate customer requirements into clear, validated technical specifications and concept layouts for automation and robotics solutions.
- Develop conceptual designs for robotic cells, automated assembly lines, material-handling systems, SPMs, leak/functional testers, and welding stations.
- Perform and review cycle-time studies, throughput and OEE calculations, and feasibility/risk assessments before commitment.
- Approve Bills of Materials (BOMs) and provide accurate engineering input for costing and proposals.
JOB DESCRIPTION
3. Execution Handover, R&D; & Documentation:
- Ensure a clean handover from pre-sales to execution with complete design documentation, calculations, and specifications.
- Drive design-for-manufacture, design-for-assembly, and design-for-cost discipline across all projects.
- Evaluate new technologies, components, and automation platforms; lead internal knowledge-sharing and best practices.
- Support root-cause analysis and design corrective actions on field/quality issues, feeding lessons back into standards.
Automation Design & Engineering Expertise:
- Mechanical design of automation systems: servo slides, gantries, indexers, pick-and-place, conveyors, fixtures, tooling, and special-purpose machines.
- Robotic integration: FANUC, KUKA, ABB, Yaskawa — cell layout, reach/payload studies, EOAT/gripper design, and safe-guarding concepts.
- High-speed assembly lines, dispensing automation, tightening SPMs, laser/MIG welding stations, leak testing, and end-of-line functional testers.
- Vision and sensing: machine-vision inspection, sensors, poka-yoke, and traceability/marking integration.
- Working awareness of PLC logic, HMI, servo sizing, and pneumatic/hydraulic circuits sufficient to direct controls counterparts.
- Functional safety and standards: ISO 13849, IEC 62061, ANSI/RIA R15.06, CE marking, and risk-assessment fundamentals.
- Manufacturing-feeding processes: metal stamping, fine blanking, machining, injection moulding, and automotive component supply.
Technical Competency:
- Expert proficiency in SolidWorks: 3D modelling, large-assembly layout, Motion Analyzer, motion simulation, weldments, sheet metal, and PDM.
- Strong command of GD&T;, DFMEA, PFMEA, tolerance stack-up, and stress/force analysis.
- Cycle-time, throughput, OEE, and capacity calculation for automation lines.
- Understanding of PPAP, APQP, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, OSHA, and ergonomic standards.
- BOM engineering, costing input, and value-engineering for competitive, manufacturable designs.
- Familiarity with ISO, CE, and RIA standards relevant to automation equipment.
Qualifications & Experience:
- BE / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or Mechatronics; advanced qualification a plus.
- 8–12 years of experience designing, developing, or commissioning automation and robotics systems in an industrial setting,
including design team-leadership / departmental management.
- Demonstrated track record of leading concept-to-release engineering for SPMs, robotic cells, or automated assembly/test lines.
- Proven proficiency in SolidWorks (2D/3D, Layout, Motion Analyzer, Motion Simulation, PDM).
- Strong understanding of industrial robots, their applications, programming concepts, and safety standards.
- Experience preparing technical proposals and presenting solutions to customers.
- Willingness to travel to customer sites as required.
Skills & Traits:
- Engineering leadership — sets standards, builds capability, and drives accountable, on-time delivery.
- Feasibility-first mindset — protects the business by getting cycle time, cost, and manufacturability right early.
- Robust problem-solver — translates complex, ambiguous requirements into practical, robust solutions.
- Cost- and manufacturing-aware — designs that win commercially and build cleanly on the floor.
- Clear communicator — explains technical concepts to customers and non-technical stakeholders.
- Disciplined, punctual, and ownership-driven — committed to completion, not partial success. Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the end-to-end design of SPMs using SolidWorks and other CAD tools.
- Handle design engineer team of 8 to 10 person for different projects.
- Conceptualize, design, and develop complex automated assembly lines for:
- Pharma industry (tablet inspection, blister packaging, etc.)
- Automotive (robotic arms, component assembly, testing)
- Electronics (PCB assembly lines, precision conveyors)
- Review and validate mechanical designs for functionality, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturability.
- Collaborate with production, controls, and project management teams to ensure design compliance with customer specifications.
- Lead and mentor a team of design engineers and draftsmen.
- Ensure compliance with industry safety and quality standards.
- Interface with clients for technical discussions, presentations, and design approvals.
Maintain design documentation, BOMs, and revision histories
- Proficient in SolidWorks (3D modelling, simulations, motion analysis).
- Deep understanding of SPM development, machine kinematics, and automation.
- Proven expertise in assembly line design especially with robotic integration.
- Familiarity with international design and safety standards.
- Strong project management and team leadership skills.
- Excellent communication and client-handling capabilities.
- Must have completed 30+ turnkey SPM projects independently or as a lead.
- Good experience in SPM weld shop assembly line robotics
