Electronics Manager
Job Summary
An Electronics Manager for Circuit Breaker Trip Units oversees the design, development, and testing of the "intelligent" core of a LV switchgear and it’s accessories. These electronic trip units (ETUs) are microprocessor-based systems that detect electrical faults—such as overloads, short circuits, and ground faults—and trigger the mechanical opening of the breaker.
Core Responsibilities
- Product Development: Lead the design of microprocessor-controlled trip units for low-voltage power circuit breakers.
- Firmware & Protection Logic: Oversee the development of protection algorithms, including Long-time (L), Short-time (S), Instantaneous (I), and Ground-fault (G) pickup and delay settings.
- Metering & Connectivity: Manage the integration of advanced features like real-time energy metering, event logging, and communication protocols such as Modbus, Profibus, or Ethernet.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all electronic components and software meet industry standards like UL 489, IEC 60947-2, and EMC/EMI requirements.
- Testing & Calibration: Supervise primary and secondary injection testing to verify the accuracy of time-current trip curves and coordination.
- Project Lifecycle: Manage projects from initial concept through factory acceptance tests (FAT) and field release.
- Technical Leadership: Direct the development of microprocessor-based trip units, ensuring high precision in Long-time, Short-time, Instantaneous, and Ground-fault (LSIG) protection algorithms.
- Product Strategy: Define product roadmaps for smart breakers, integrating IoT connectivity (Modbus, Ethernet), energy metering, and advanced diagnostics.
- Compliance & Standards: Ensure all designs comply with UL 489, IEC 60947-2, and EMC/EMI requirements for industrial environments.
- Verification & Testing: Oversee primary and secondary injection testing,
time-current curve validation, and reliability testing (HALT/HASS).
- Team Management: Mentor a team of 5–10 engineers, managing project budgets, timelines, and vendor relationships for components like Current Transformers (CTs) and PCBAs.
Job Requirements & Qualifications
- Technical Expertise: Knowledge of low-voltage switchgear, circuit breaker fundamentals, and electrical distribution systems.
- Electronics Knowledge: Understanding of microprocessor-based controls and solid-state sensors.
- Software Familiarity: Experience with configuration software used for setting and calibrating ETUs.
- Testing Experience: Capability to perform secondary injection tests for troubleshooting and maintenance.
Key Technical Skills
- Hardware Design: Deep knowledge of analog and digital circuit design, including current transformers (CTs) for sensing and solid-state circuitry for tripping.
- Embedded Systems: Proficiency in C/C++ programming for microcontrollers and real-time operating systems (RTOS) used in safety-critical applications.
- Sensing Technology: Expertise in True RMS measurement techniques to ensure trip units are unaffected by harmonics or ambient temperature.
- Simulation Tools: Ability to use tools like MATLAB or SPICE for circuit simulation and Altium or Cadence or Eagle for PCB design.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or a related field.
- Qualified Experience: 8–12+ years in LV switchgear, protection relays, or power electronics, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership or managerial role.
- Safety Certifications: Familiarity with high-voltage safety practices and standards like NFPA 70 or OSHA.
Key Skills
- Understanding time-current curves and coordinating protection devices.
- Troubleshooting electronic control modules.
- Programming protective settings.
- Interpreting fault diagnostics.
