Designation: Education Specialist / Coding Coach

Job Purpose / Role:
AAPC is seeking experienced and learner-focused Education Specialist / Coding Coache to support learners enrolled in the LVI Practicode program. This role will serve as a primary learner-facing coding support resource, helping students interpret Practicode cases, understand coding guidelines, apply correct code selection logic, and navigate learner questions related to Practicode assignments, rationales, answer keys, scoring, resets, and case-review expectations. The role is intentionally more coaching- and learner-support-focused than a traditional Coding Coach/content-development role, while still requiring strong coding accuracy, excellent written explanations, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
The Education Specialist / Coach will provide clear, accurate, and encouraging support to learners through email, ManageEngine / Practicode requests, phone or virtual learner-support channels as needed, and internal collaboration with Education, Training Support, Content, and Operations teams. The role supports improved course completion, learner confidence, Practicode progression, and exam-readiness outcomes by providing timely, educational, and learner-friendly guidance.
Job Duties and responsibilities:
Key Result Areas / Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Learner Support & Coaching
• Support learners on coding cases across ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and modifiers.
• Break down complex coding scenarios and explain why a code is correct/incorrect.
• Guide learners on case interpretation, documentation review, and coding best practices.
• Provide clear, structured, and learner-friendly explanations to improve accuracy and confidence.
Practicode Support & Query Resolution
• Respond to learner queries via AAPC’s internal ticketing system within defined timelines (48-hour SLA).
• Review learner-submitted case questions and identify gaps in coding logic or understanding.
• Resolve issues related to answer keys, rationales, scoring, and case workflows.
• Escalate content gaps, discrepancies, or technical issues to relevant teams.
Learner Success & Quality
• Contribute to course completion, exam readiness, and learner satisfaction.
• Identify recurring learner errors and provide targeted coaching to address them.
• Ensure responses are accurate, consistent, and aligned with coding guidelines.
• Maintain high-quality standards in all learner interactions.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
• Work closely with internal teams (Education, Content, Operations) to improve learner experience.
• Provide inputs on content corrections and process improvements based on learner feedback.
• Stay updated with coding guideline changes and apply them in coaching,
Technical Competencies
• Minimum Qualifications and Education is Graduation
• 5+ years of medical coding experience (US healthcare).
• Valuable exposure and understanding of facility specific coding and auditing guidelines
• Exposure to and understanding of surgery coding and auditing guidelines is mandatory
• Understanding of ICD-10-CM guidelines is mandatory
• Experience in US healthcare coding industry is preferred
• Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
• Should have a thorough knowledge of Surgical (CPT codes) and ICD-10-CM coding guidelines.
• Good writing skills, able to write an educational rationale for the coding.
Trainings / Certifications:
• CPC (Certified Professional Coder certification) is mandatory.
• One or more of COC®, CIC®, CRC®, CPMA®, CPC-I / Instructor credentials, desirable.
