Civil Engineer Roles and Responsibilities

Job Summary
The Civil Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, supervising, and executing civil engineering projects while ensuring quality, safety, cost efficiency, and timely completion. The role includes site supervision, contractor management, quality inspections, estimation, documentation, and compliance with applicable engineering standards and statutory regulations.
Roles and Responsibilities
Project Planning & Execution
- Plan, coordinate, and execute civil construction projects according to approved drawings and specifications.
- Prepare project schedules and monitor progress to ensure timely completion.
- Coordinate with architects, consultants, contractors, and internal departments.
- Ensure construction activities are completed within the approved budget and timeline.
- Monitor daily site activities and resolve technical issues.
Site Supervision
- Supervise excavation, foundation, RCC, masonry, structural steel, finishing, and infrastructure works.
- Ensure construction is carried out according to approved engineering drawings.
- Verify measurements and certify completed work.
- Monitor labour productivity and equipment utilization.
- Conduct regular site inspections to maintain work quality.
Quality Control
- Ensure compliance with quality standards and project specifications.
- Inspect incoming construction materials.
- Coordinate laboratory testing for concrete, soil, aggregates, steel, and other materials.
- Identify defects and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Maintain quality inspection records and reports.
Estimation & Cost Control
- Prepare quantity estimates and Bills of Quantities (BOQ).
- Verify contractor bills and measurements.
- Monitor material consumption and control project costs.
- Assist in preparing project budgets and cost forecasts.
- Recommend value engineering opportunities to reduce costs without compromising quality.
Contractor Management
- Coordinate and supervise contractors and subcontractors.
- Monitor contractor performance, productivity, and compliance.
- Verify contractor work before approving invoices.
- Ensure contractors follow safety procedures and contractual obligations.
Documentation
- Maintain project drawings, revisions, and engineering documents.
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports.
- Maintain inspection records, work permits, and project documentation.
- Prepare completion reports and handover documents.
Health, Safety & Setting (HSE)
- Ensure compliance with company safety policies and statutory regulations.
- Conduct regular site safety inspections.
- Ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Identify hazards and implement preventive measures.
- Report accidents, incidents, and near misses promptly.
- Support emergency preparedness and safety training activities.
Maintenance & Infrastructure
- Monitor the condition of buildings, roads, drainage systems, and other civil infrastructure.
- Plan preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
- Coordinate repairs and renovation projects.
- Ensure proper upkeep of factory buildings and utilities.
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with local building codes and government regulations.
- Coordinate statutory inspections and approvals.
- Maintain all required engineering and project records.
- Support environmental and sustainability initiatives.
Team Coordination
- Work closely with Mechanical, Electrical, Production, and Maintenance departments.
- Guide junior engineers, supervisors, and site staff.
- Participate in technical meetings and project review discussions.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- B.E./B.Tech in Civil Engineering.
- Diploma in Civil Engineering (for Junior Civil Engineer roles).
Experience
- Freshers: Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET).
- 2–5 Years: Site Engineer / Civil Engineer.
- 5–10 Years: Senior Civil Engineer.
- 10+ Years: Project Engineer / Construction Manager.
