General Manager Meat Factory: Roles and Responsibilities

The General Manager (GM) of a meat processing factory is responsible for the overall management, profitability, production efficiency, quality standards, food safety, and compliance of the facility.

1. Strategic Leadership & Business Management

- Develop and implement business plans and operational strategies.
- Set production, sales, and profitability targets.
- Monitor factory performance and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to increase productivity and reduce costs.
- Coordinate with senior management, customers, suppliers, and regulatory authorities.

2. Production Management

- Oversee daily slaughtering, processing, packaging, and dispatch operations.
- Ensure production schedules are achieved efficiently.
- Monitor machine utilization and production output.
- Minimize downtime and production losses.
- Ensure optimum utilization of manpower and resources.

3. Food Safety & Quality Assurance

- Ensure compliance with HACCP, ISO 22000, GMP, and food safety regulations.
- Monitor quality control procedures throughout processing and packaging.
- Investigate customer complaints and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure product traceability and quality documentation.
- Maintain hygiene and sanitation standards across the factory.

4. Regulatory Compliance

- Ensure compliance with local and international meat industry regulations.
- Maintain licenses, permits, and certifications.
- Prepare for government inspections and audits.




- Ensure compliance with animal welfare requirements where applicable.
- Monitor environmental and waste management regulations.

5. Financial Management

- Prepare and manage annual budgets.
- Control operational expenses and production costs.
- Monitor profitability and financial performance.
- Approve major purchases and capital expenditures.
- Review inventory levels and minimize wastage.

6. Supply Chain & Inventory Management

- Oversee procurement of livestock, raw materials, packaging materials, and consumables.
- Maintain adequate inventory levels.
- Monitor cold storage and warehouse operations.
- Ensure timely delivery of finished products to customers.
- Manage supplier relationships and negotiate contracts.

7. Human Resource Management

- Lead and supervise department managers and supervisors.
- Develop staffing plans and workforce requirements.
- Ensure employee training and skill development.
- Conduct performance reviews.
- Foster a positive workplace culture and employee engagement.

8. Health, Safety & Workplace (HSE)

- Ensure compliance with workplace safety standards.
- Monitor use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Investigate safety incidents and implement preventive measures.




- Promote a safety-first culture.
- Ensure proper handling and disposal of waste and by-products.

9. Maintenance & Engineering Oversight

- Ensure preventive and corrective maintenance programs are implemented.
- Monitor equipment performance and reliability.
- Approve maintenance schedules to minimize production disruptions.
- Plan facility improvements and equipment upgrades.

10. Customer & Stakeholder Management

- Build strong relationships with customers and distributors.
- Ensure customer requirements are met.
- Manage audits conducted by clients and certification bodies.
- Support business development and market expansion activities.
