The Endoscopy Technician assists gastroenterologists during diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures by preparing equipment, assisting in patient care, ensuring proper reprocessing of endoscopes, maintaining infection prevention standards, documenting procedures, and ensuring compliance with NABH standards, manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFU), and hospital policies.

Key Responsibilities

1. Patient Care

- Prepare patients for endoscopic procedures.
- Verify patient identity using approved identification methods.
- Assist in patient positioning.
- Maintain patient privacy and dignity.
- Provide reassurance before and after procedures.
- Assist in secure transfer of patients.

2. Procedure Assistance

Assist the gastroenterologist during

- Upper GI Endoscopy / Colonoscopy / Sigmoidoscopy / ERCP (if performed) / EUS / PEG insertion / Polypectomy / Biopsy / Foreign body removal / Endoscopic haemostasis

Responsibilities include:
- Preparing accessories / Handling biopsy forceps, snares, injection needles, clips etc. Obtaining specimens / Assisting during therapeutic procedures / Ensuring proper functioning of video processor and light source.

3. Endoscope Reprocessing Responsible for complete reprocessing according to manufacturer IFU and hospital protocol:

- Leak testing / Manual cleaning / High-Level Disinfection (HLD) / Automated Endoscope Reprocessor (AER) operation / Drying / Alcohol flushing (where applicable) / Proper storage / Documentation of each cycle / Traceability records

4. Infection Prevention & Control

- Follow standard precautions / Use PPE appropriately / Biomedical Waste segregation.
- Safe handling of contaminated instruments / Spill management / Needle stick injury reporting / Participate in infection surveillance / Comply with Hospital Infection Control Committee policies.

Equipment Management

Daily checking of

- Video processor / Monitor / Light source / Insufflator / Suction apparatus
- Electrosurgical unit / CO insufflator (if available) / Endoscopes
- Water bottle system

Report malfunction immediately. 6. Inventory Management

Maintain stock of

- Biopsy forceps / Injection needles / Guide wires / Cytology brushes / PEG kits
- Accessories / Disinfectants / PPE

Maintain minimum stock level and expiry monitoring. 7. Documentation

Maintain

- Procedure Register / Endoscope Usage Register / Reprocessing Log Book / AER Log
- Maintenance Register / Breakdown Register / Temperature/Humidity records
- Midazolam uses register / Daily checklist / Biomedical Waste records
- Incident reporting / Equipment traceability records

8. Patient Safety

- Participate in WHO Surgical Safety Checklist where applicable.
- Verify consent availability.
- Ensure availability of emergency trolley.
- Check oxygen and suction.
- Ensure crash cart readiness.
- Report adverse events immediately.

9. NABH Responsibilities Comply with NABH requirements regarding:
