Situated just inside the city of Winnipeg, the V Residence was designed for a retired couple relocating from rural Manitoba to be closer to extended family and amenities. The private pastoral setting is ideal for a home that is centred around entertaining family and friends and connecting with the outdoors. The home contracts and expands with everyday life and is equally comfortable when inhabited by the owners or with large groups of friends and family.

The exterior is clad in thermally modified shiplap siding which has been charred using the Shou Sugi Ban method and alludes to the owner’s connections to Japan. Douglas fir contrasts and complements the charred cladding and is featured on the glulam entry canopy as well as the glulam post and beam trellis and screen porch that wraps the south and west faces of the structure.



The screen porch features operable screens which allow the space to open to the forest and river to the west while extending the use of the space in shoulder seasons.

Overall, the home enhances this spectacular setting, the charred cladding providing a contrasting backdrop to the exterior foliage and the exterior glazing framing sublime views to the outside from the interior spaces.
