₹300–₹500 per hour (Negotiable based on experience)
About the Project
We are building an early-stage connected IoT hardware product for Indian homes. The product consists of two interconnected devices—a mains-powered controller and a remote sensing unit—that communicate with each other and the cloud to automate a household utility function.
The current prototype is functional and built using ESP8266 on a breadboard/perfboard setup. We are now moving into the next phase of product development, including professional PCB design, enclosure development, and preparation for a pilot deployment.
Complete product details will be shared under a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).
Key Responsibilities
Convert the existing perfboard prototype into production-ready 2-layer KiCad PCB designs.
Design mains-safe PCBs with proper isolation barriers, creepage and clearance, fused & MOV-protected AC input, opto-isolated relay drive, test points, and programming headers.
Design IP65/IP54-rated 3D-printable enclosures suitable for indoor and outdoor environments.
Review and improve hardware architecture,
mains switching design, current sensing, and manufacturability.
Provide technical guidance on embedded systems, OTA updates, Wi-Fi provisioning, and next-generation MCU selection.
Support the transition from prototype to pilot production with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) best practices.
Required Skills & Experience
Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in IoT hardware or embedded product development.
Proven experience in designing production-ready PCBs using KiCad (or willingness to work in KiCad).
Solid understanding of mains-powered electronics, isolation, creepage/clearance, and PCB safety practices.
Experience with enclosure design using Fusion 360, SolidWorks, FreeCAD, or similar CAD software.
Ability to improve and productionize existing prototypes rather than designing only from scratch.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Indian mains safety standards and electrical design practices.
Knowledge of ESP8266/ESP32, ESP-NOW, MQTT, WebSockets, or similar IoT communication protocols.
Experience in prototype-to-production workflows (JLCPCB, PCBPower, DFM, injection molding).
Familiarity with energy metering modules, CT sensors, and common IoT sensing technologies.
Engagement Model
This is a contract/fractional consulting role with flexible working hours.
The engagement will begin with a fixed-scope PCB review and layout assignment. Based on performance and project requirements, it may continue as an ongoing hourly or retainer-based consulting engagement.
