Position Name: Engineer / Sr. Engineer Power Electronics & Drives Specialist Central Maintenance (Utilities E&I;)

Department: Central Maintenance

Sub-Department: Utilities Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I;)

Reporting To: Manager Central Maintenance (Utilities – E&I;)

Role Objective:

To ensure the reliable, safe, and efficient operation and maintenance of Power Electronics and Variable Speed Drive (VSD) systems across utility and process facilities in the iron and steel plant. The role is responsible for maximizing equipment availability, improving process reliability, minimizing downtime, optimizing energy efficiency, and supporting modernization initiatives involving industrial drive systems, power converters, and automation technologies.

Role Responsibilities:

- Plan, supervise, and execute preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance of AC/DC drives, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), Soft Starters, DC converters, Servo Drives, Active Front End (AFE) systems, regenerative drives, UPS systems, and power electronic equipment.
- Maintain high availability and reliability of drive systems installed in utility plants, Water Treatment Plants, Pump Houses, Air Compressors, Cooling Towers, Oxygen Plants, Power Plants, Blast Furnace utilities, Steel Melting Shop, Rolling Mills, Material Handling Systems, and auxiliary facilities.
- Perform fault diagnosis and troubleshooting of drive systems, power converters, IGBT modules, rectifiers, inverters, DC links, braking systems, harmonic filters, transformers, cooling systems, and associated control circuits.
- Analyze drive faults using OEM diagnostic software, event logs, oscilloscopes, power analyzers, communication diagnostics, and predictive maintenance techniques.
- Carry out preventive inspections including thermal scanning, insulation testing, capacitor health checks, cooling system inspections, fan replacements, firmware verification, parameter backup, and communication testing.
- Commission, configure, tune, and optimize AC/DC drives, vector-controlled drives, servo systems, and motion control applications.
- Maintain communication networks between drives and PLC, DCS, SCADA, HMI, Remote I/O, and Industrial Ethernet protocols such as Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, CAN, DeviceNet, and other industrial communication systems.
- Coordinate with automation engineers during system modifications, software upgrades, drive replacements, PLC logic integration, and modernization projects.
- Optimize motor-drive performance for energy efficiency, process stability, torque control, speed regulation, and reduced equipment stress.
- Perform harmonic analysis and recommend suitable mitigation measures including harmonic filters, active filters, line reactors, DC chokes, and power quality improvement solutions.
- Support commissioning, testing, FAT/SAT activities, and performance validation of new electrical drive installations.
- Prepare technical specifications, maintenance procedures, commissioning reports, and drive parameter documentation.
- Maintain backups of drive parameters, application software, firmware versions,



and configuration files for critical equipment.
- Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) of recurring drive failures and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Coordinate with OEMs, system integrators, contractors, and internal departments for troubleshooting, upgrades, and annual maintenance activities.
- Monitor critical maintenance KPIs including MTBF, MTTR, equipment availability, drive failure trends, energy performance, and maintenance compliance.
- Ensure availability of critical spares including IGBT modules, control cards, power boards, cooling fans, capacitors, communication modules, encoders, and interface components.
- Ensure compliance with electrical safety standards, LOTO procedures, arc flash safety, PTW systems, and statutory regulations during maintenance activities.
- Participate in digitalization, Industry 4.0, predictive diagnostics, remote monitoring, and smart maintenance initiatives related to electrical drive systems.
- Provide technical guidance and training to engineers, technicians, operators, and contractors on power electronics, drive maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Energy Performance: Optimize motor-drive efficiency, reduce electrical losses, improve power factor, minimize harmonics, and support plant energy conservation objectives through effective utilization of power electronic systems.

Ensure compliance with SA8000 requirements and promote ethical labor practices, workplace safety, and employee welfare within the assigned area of responsibility.

Knowledge:

- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical, Electrical & Electronics, Power Electronics, Electronics & Instrumentation, Instrumentation, or equivalent Engineering discipline.
- Minimum 2 - 7 years of experience in maintenance, commissioning, or troubleshooting of industrial Power Electronics and Drive Systems in an integrated Iron & Steel Plant or other continuous process industries.
- Strong knowledge of industrial AC/DC drives, PLC/DCS systems, industrial communication protocols, electrical protection systems, harmonics, and power quality management.
- Experience with major OEM drive systems such as Siemens, ABB, Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric, Danfoss, Yaskawa, Fuji Electric, Toshiba, Mitsubishi Electric, or equivalent.
- Knowledge of Indian Electricity Rules, IEC/IEEE standards, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 50001, electrical safety regulations, and utility maintenance best practices.
