Control and Relay Protection Engineer
Job Summary The Control and Relay Protection Engineer is responsible for the design, engineering, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of protection, control, automation, and monitoring systems for power transmission and distribution substations. The role ensures safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical power systems by implementing protection schemes, control systems, and communication networks.
Key Responsibilities
Protection System Engineering
Design protection schemes for transmission and distribution networks.
Develop protection settings and coordination studies for:
Distance Protection
Differential Protection
Overcurrent Protection
Earth Fault Protection
Busbar Protection
Transformer Protection
Generator Protection
Perform short-circuit, load flow, and protection coordination studies.
Control System Engineering
Design substation control and monitoring systems.
Prepare control schematics, logic diagrams, and functional designs.
Develop interlocking and control philosophies.
Configure and test HMI, SCADA, and automation systems.
Engineering Documentation
Prepare and review
Protection and Control Schematics
Wiring Diagrams
Single Line Diagrams (SLD)
Cable Schedules
Terminal Plans
Bill of Materials (BOM)
Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
Ensure compliance with project specifications and international standards.
Relay Configuration and Testing
Configure numerical relays from manufacturers such as:
Siemens SIPROTEC
GE Multilin
ABB Relion
Schneider Electric MiCOM
SEL (Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories)
Perform relay testing and validation.
Conduct factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT).
Commissioning Activities
Execute protection and control system commissioning.
Conduct end-to-end testing and relay coordination verification.
Perform substation energization activities.
Troubleshoot protection and control system issues.
Communication and Automation
Implement IEC 61850-based substation automation systems.
Configure communication protocols

Support integration with SCADA and Energy Management Systems (EMS).
Compliance and Safety

Required Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering.
Master's Degree is an advantage.
Experience
Typically 3–15+ years in protection and control engineering.
Experience in transmission, distribution, or renewable energy projects.
Technical Skills
Protection relay applications and settings.
Power system studies using ETAP, DIgSILENT, PSCAD, or similar software.
Substation automation and SCADA integration.
IEC 61850 engineering and testing.
Reading and preparing electrical drawings and schematics.

Problem-solving and analytical thinking.
Technical report writing.
Project coordination and stakeholder management.
