Role Summary The Director – HR will be a strategic member of the university's leadership team, responsible for designing and driving the end-to-end people strategy for faculty, academic leadership, and administrative staff. The role demands a leader with solid academic institutional credibility, deep understanding of university governance and administration, and a proven track record of building HR functions within top-tier, NIRF-ranked institutions.
Key Responsibilities Design and lead the university's overall HR strategy aligned to its academic vision, growth plans, and institutional accreditation goals (NAAC, NBA, NIRF).
Lead end-to-end talent acquisition for faculty, research, and administrative positions, including senior academic leadership hires (Deans, HoDs, Professors).
Build and institutionalize robust performance management, career progression, and faculty appraisal systems in line with UGC/AICTE norms and best-in-class academic practices.
Own compensation & benefits strategy, benchmarking against top private universities and NIRF top-ranked institutions to ensure competitiveness in faculty and staff retention.
Drive leadership development, succession planning, and capability-building programs for academic and administrative leadership.
Oversee HR operations, compliance, statutory requirements, HRMS/HRIS systems, and administrative governance across campuses.
Partner closely with the Vice Chancellor's office, Registrar, and Deans on organizational design, manpower planning, and academic restructuring.
Champion a strong institutional culture, employee engagement, diversity, and grievance-redressal mechanisms across faculty and staff.
Support accreditation and ranking exercises (NAAC, NIRF, NBA) by ensuring HR data, faculty documentation, and compliance records are audit-ready.
Manage HR budgets, vendor relationships (recruitment partners, HR technology, payroll),
and audits.
Lead change management initiatives as the university scales new schools, campuses, or programs.
Candidate
Profile & Qualifications 16–20 years of progressive HR leadership experience, with a significant portion in the higher education / academic sector.
Postgraduate degree / MBA in Human Resources from a reputed, well-regarded institute; a strong academic pedigree is essential.
Prior experience working with top NIRF-ranked universities or institutions is strongly preferred — candidates should be able to demonstrate familiarity with the operating rhythms, governance structures, and talent expectations of leading ranked institutions.
Demonstrated experience in university/institutional administration — not purely corporate HR — including exposure to academic governance, statutory bodies (UGC/AICTE), and Board/Trust-level reporting.
Proven experience managing HR for a large, multidisciplinary workforce (faculty + non-teaching + administrative staff).
Strong understanding of faculty recruitment, academic career frameworks, and higher-education compliance requirements.
Excellent stakeholder management skills, with experience partnering directly with Vice Chancellors, Registrars, Trustees, or equivalent senior academic leadership.
Hands-on experience with HRMS/HRIS implementation and HR analytics.
Exceptional communication, negotiation, and change-management capabilities.
Preferred Attributes
Prior tenure as Director/Head-HR (or equivalent) at a top-tier private university, deemed university, or NIRF top-50/100 ranked institution.
Exposure to multi-campus or multi-school university structures.
Understanding of NAAC, NBA, and NIRF ranking parameters as they relate to HR and faculty data.
A team-oriented, consultative leadership style suited to an academic environment.
