Clinical Data, Imaging & Neurophysiology Intern — DBS Patient Database Project

Location: Mumbai (in office) · Duration: 3–6 months · Start: ASAP · Commitment: [6 days/week] · Stipend: [Commensurate with expertise-starting at Rs. 50000]

Company Description

Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre, established in Mumbai in 1973, is a multi-specialty tertiary care hospital. The hospital's Functional Neurosurgery programme has performed Deep Brain Stimulation for movement disorders over many years, generating one of the more substantial longitudinal DBS datasets in the country.

Role Description

We are building a de-identified, research-ready digital database of DBS patients operated at Jaslok. The archive spans longitudinal clinical records, operative notes, stimulation parameters, multi-visit outcome scores, neuroimaging on CD/DVD, and intraoperative microelectrode recordings (MER).

Please read this before applying: a substantial portion of the source data is handwritten — ward notes, follow-up sheets, and programming records, some of it partially legible. The core of this internship is careful, patient transcription of those records into structured digital form, working alongside the operating neurosurgeon to resolve ambiguities.

It is meticulous work with real research value at the end of it, but the day-to-day is transcription and quality control, not analysis. Candidates who enjoy this kind of precision work will do well; candidates looking primarily for a statistics or publication role will not.

Responsibilities

- Review handwritten patient records and abstract relevant clinical variables
- Digitise records through manual entry and OCR tools, validating OCR output against source
- Structure and maintain data in Excel / REDCap / Airtable with version control
- De-identify records: strip patient identifiers, assign and maintain anonymised IDs
- Extract imaging from CDs/DVDs; organise and anonymise DICOM files
- Organise MER recordings,

labelled by patient, trajectory, and surgical stage
- Cross-check entries and flag inconsistencies for clinical review

What you get out of it Direct mentorship from the operating neurosurgeon, working exposure to functional neurosurgery and neurophysiology data, an internship certificate, and acknowledgement or co-authorship on publications arising from the database, in line with contribution.

Qualifications

- Candidates should possess skills in Data Entry, Medical Records, and Clinical Data Management for accurate transcription and structuring of patient information
- Candidates should possess skills in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with structured databases such as REDCap or SQL
- Candidates should possess working knowledge of medical terminology sufficient to interpret clinical notes, drug names, and outcome scales
- Candidates should possess skills in Data Anonymization and an understanding of patient confidentiality obligations
- Currently pursuing or recently completed MBBS, nursing, allied health sciences, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, life sciences, or data science . Medical and nursing students are particularly encouraged to apply, given the handwritten source material.
- Sustained attention to detail and comfort with repetitive, precision work over several months
- Available on-site in Mumbai for the full duration

Preferred

- Prior experience transcribing handwritten or scanned clinical documents, or with OCR tools
- Exposure to DICOM or neuroimaging file handling
- Exposure to neurophysiology data (EEG, MER, evoked potentials)
- Prior clinical research or audit project experience
- Candidates with additional AI/ML experience may be considered for a separate, extended role on the project

To Apply
- Send your CV to [email protected] with the subject line "DBS Database Intern". In two or three sentences, tell us about a time you worked with messy, incomplete, or handwritten records — what you did and what went wrong.
