The Cast House Operator is responsible for executing safe, continuous, and efficient tapping and hot metal handling operations within a Blast Furnace or Corex plant environment. Operating in high-temperature conditions, the role centers on the skilled operation of mud gun machines and taphole drills (manual lever, pneumatic, or hydraulic) to open and close tapholes, alongside oxygen lancing as required to facilitate tapping.
Beyond core tapping duties, operators manage critical furnace components by changing tuyeres and tuyere coolers, executing tuyere plugging and de-plugging, and carrying out peri-wall opening, cleaning, and closing operations.
A major aspect of the role involves runner, trough, and refractory preparation, where operators inspect and maintain main runners, tilting runners, templates, and refractory linings to safely direct and monitor the flow of hot metal and slag. During active tapping,
the operator tracks key cast house parameters such as liquid flow and temperature, conducts routine checks and basic troubleshooting on hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and coordinates continuously with the furnace control room and maintenance teams to ensure seamless shift execution.
To qualify, candidates typically require a Secondary School completion, ITI, Diploma, or B.Tech degree, combined with hands-on operational experience in a Blast Furnace or Corex cast house workplace. The position demands the capability to meet rigorous operational demands under extreme thermal conditions, expertise in taphole and refractory tooling, strict adherence to industrial safety standards and high-heat Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocols, and effective communication skills in Hindi or basic English.
