Role & responsibilities
Position : Assistant Manager/Deputy Manager (Metallurgy) Forge Shop & Heat Treatment
Location : Thirumazhisai, Chennai.
Reports To : Manager Metallurgy / Head Quality
1. Metallurgical Process Management
- Lead metallurgical control of raw materials, forging, heat treatment, and final product quality.
- Establish and optimize process parameters for billet heating, forging, and heat treatment.
- Review and approve metallurgical test reports and process validation results.
- Ensure metallurgical compliance with customer drawings, standards, and specifications.
2. Forge Shop Control
- Monitor billet heating temperatures, soaking time, furnace atmosphere, and forging temperatures.
- Optimize forging parameters to improve grain flow, die life, productivity, and product quality.
- Investigate forging defects such as laps, folds, seams, cracks, underfill, overheating, and internal discontinuities.
- Support new die development and process validation from a metallurgical perspective.
3. Heat Treatment Management
- Develop, validate, and monitor heat treatment cycles including:
- Annealing ,Normalizing, Quenching & Tempering ,Stress Relieving, Isothermal Annealing & Induction Hardening (where applicable)
- Ensure compliance with AIAG CQI-9 requirements.
- Review furnace calibration, Temperature Uniformity Survey (TUS), System Accuracy Test (SAT), and preventive maintenance records.
- Monitor quench media quality, agitation, temperature, and process capability.
4. Metallurgical Laboratory Management
- Lead laboratory operations for:
- Chemical analysis (OES/Spectrometer),Metallography, Microstructure evaluation
- Grain size measurement, Inclusion rating, Decarburization assessment
- Macro etching, Hardness testing, Tensile testing, Impact testing
- Case depth evaluation (where applicable)
- Ensure calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment & Approve metallurgical reports before release.
5. Failure Analysis & Problem Solving
- Lead investigations into internal rejections, customer complaints, and field failures.
- Perform fracture analysis and metallurgical investigations.
- Drive structured problem-solving using: 8D,5 Why, Fishbone Diagram, PFMEA updates
- Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) and verify effectiveness.
06. Documentation & Compliance
- Review and approve:
- Heat treatment records, Metallurgical test reports, SOPs and Work Instructions
- Control Plans, PFMEA updates, Laboratory procedures, Process validation reports
- Ensure complete traceability and document control as per IATF 16949 requirements.
Preferred candidate profile
- Forging metallurgy & Wrought Steel Analytical skill ( Steel Mill oriented issues)
- Heat treatment of carbon, alloy, and micro-alloyed steels, Metallography and microstructure analysis
- Failure analysis, Mechanical testing
- AIAG CQI-9 Heat Treat System Assessment
- AIAG Core Tools (APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, MSA, SPC, Control Plan)
- IATF 16949 requirements , ASTM, SAE, ISO, EN, and DIN standards , Root cause analysis (8D, 5 Why, Fishbone)
- Statistical analysis and process capability

Qualifications
- B.E./B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Engineering.
- 12+ years of experience in forging and machining, with at least 5 years in leadership roles.
- Proven track record of successful recent product launches in automotive, aerospace, or industrial sectors.
- Familiarity with forging processes, metallurgical properties, and heat treatment.
- Experience with closed-die forging; exposure to open-die forging is an added advantage
