About the role

We are hiring a Senior Software Development Engineer to join the Spire engineering team at EquiLend. You will work on backend services that sit at the core of a securities finance platform used by leading financial institutions globally. The stack is Java and Spring Boot. The work involves building, shipping, and maintaining production-grade microservices that handle real, concurrent financial data load.

You will work closely with a small, technically strong team. We expect engineers at this level to take genuine ownership — from design decisions through to production. If you prefer to wait for complete specifications before starting, this probably is not the right fit.

What you'll do

- Designing and building backend microservices and REST APIs in Java and Spring Boot, taking ownership of service boundaries, error handling, and versioning decisions
- Owning features end to end from technical design through to production deployment including writing unit and integration tests as a core part of the delivery cycle
- Writing and optimising SQL queries, working with JPA and Hibernate, and diagnosing performance issues in production environments
- Participating actively in code reviews, contributing to technical discussions, and collaborating closely with fellow engineers across the teams to ensure high-quality releases.
- Investigating and resolving production issues, including problems that span multiple services in a distributed system
- Applying AI tooling such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude to accelerate day-to-day development work including code generation, debugging, and test writing
- Mentor junior developers and share knowledge across the engineering team.
- Takes ownership of tasks and features, including situations where requirements are ambiguous makes informed decisions and sees work through to completion
- Proactively communicates progress, risks, and blockers rather than waiting to be asked; keeps the team informed when things are not going to plan
- Engages constructively in code reviews both giving and receiving feedback and is comfortable respectfully challenging a technical approach
- Able to explain technical problems and delays clearly to non-technical stakeholders, without relying on jargon
- Driven by curiosity and a genuine appetite for self-improvement; regularly picks up new tools, frameworks, or concepts independently





What we're looking for

- 4+ years of commercial experience in Java development, with strong hands-on expertise in Spring Boot.
- Solid, production-tested experience with Java and Spring Boot building and shipping backend services that handle real concurrent load in a live environment
- Proven ability to design and deliver microservices and REST APIs end to end, making informed decisions on service structure, error handling, and API versioning
- Strong SQL skills, with experience diagnosing and resolving performance issues; solid working knowledge of indexing and query execution
- Comfortable writing unit and integration tests using JUnit, Mockito, or equivalent frameworks, and experienced in debugging live production issues. Experience in build tools like Maven or Gradle.
- Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and object-oriented principles, applied within shared, multi-engineer codebases
- Hands-on experience with AI coding tools and an open, practical mindset toward using them as part of day-to-day engineering work
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively.
- Exposure to front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Angular, or React is an advantage.

Good to have

Candidates with exposure to any of the following will have a head start on the role.

- Apache Kafka — experience with event-driven architectures, consumer groups, and reliable message processing
- Spring Security, JWT, and OAuth — securing REST APIs and managing authentication flows
- Docker — containerising and running Java applications
- Background in securities finance, capital markets, or other regulated financial data environments
- Exposure to distributed tracing or application performance monitoring tooling in production
