Job Purpose The Packaging Manager will be responsible for driving Existing Product Development (EPD) initiatives with a strong focus on cost optimization, packaging re-engineering, and vendor development , while also supporting New Product Development (NPD) by developing innovative, functional, and market-appropriate packaging solutions. The role requires close coordination with cross-functional teams to ensure packaging meets cost, quality, operational, shelf-life, regulatory, and branding requirements for both domestic and export markets. Key Responsibilities 1. Existing Product Development (EPD) – Cost Optimization & Packaging Re-engineering Review and benchmark existing packaging specifications against market competition and industry standards. Identify opportunities for cost reduction through material substitution, downgauging, design optimization, size rationalization, and alternate structures without compromising product quality or shelf life. Conduct packaging trials and validation for alternate materials, grammage optimization, and specification improvements. Drive packaging re-engineering projects across laminates, mono cartons, labels, jars, pouches, corrugated boxes, and flexible packaging. Coordinate with packaging material suppliers for commercial feasibility, alternate proposals, and technical improvements. Track and report monthly and annual packaging cost savings achieved through EPD initiatives. Monitor packaging wastage and improvement opportunities related to packaging performance. 2. New Product Development (NPD) – Packaging Development Support new product launches by developing packaging solutions that are functional, safe, cost-effective, and visually appealing.
Ensure packaging designs meet: Brand guidelines Product positioning requirements Shelf-life expectations Regulatory and statutory requirements Work closely with R&D; and Marketing teams for: Packaging concepts Pack claims Material selection Consumer convenience features Coordinate prototype development and commercial trials before launch. 3. Packaging Design Coordination & Execution Coordinate with internal/external design agencies for: Artwork development Packaging layouts Label approvals Print readiness Ensure proper management of: Artwork approval process Version control Packaging sample approval system Drive SOP adherence for packaging change management and documentation. 4. Vendor Development & Packaging Material Management Develop and maintain packaging BOMs for all SKUs. Identify, evaluate, and qualify new packaging material vendors based on: Cost competitiveness Quality standards Service capability Supply reliability Conduct periodic vendor audits for specification compliance and delivery performance. Coordinate with procurement team for commercial negotiations and supplier development. 5. Compliance & Process Improvement Ensure packaging compliance with:
FSSAI regulations Labeling norms Packaging standards Customer/export requirements Drive continuous improvement initiatives in packaging quality, cost, and sustainability. Maintain packaging specifications and documentation control. Key Skills Required Strong technical knowledge of: Flexible laminates Mono cartons Labels Corrugated boxes Jars and rigid packaging Stand-up pouches and versatile films Strong exposure to packaging cost optimization and EPD projects . Good understanding of printing, artwork approvals, and packaging development process. Strong vendor management and negotiation capability. Data-driven approach toward packaging savings and performance improvement. Knowledge of FSSAI packaging regulations and compliance requirements. Strong cross-functional coordination and project execution skills. Qualification B.Sc / B.E / Diploma in Packaging Technology / Printing Technology / Food Technology / Polymer Technology or equivalent. Experience Minimum 10+ years of experience in FMCG / Food Manufacturing / Consumer Goods industry . Minimum 4–5 years of hands-on experience in EPD-driven packaging cost optimization and packaging re-engineering . Experience in handling both NPD and EPD packaging projects is mandatory. Expected Traits Proactive and result-oriented mindset with strong ownership. Hands-on approach to packaging trials and validations. Strong communication and stakeholder management skills. High commercial awareness with focus on packaging cost KPIs. Ability to work cross-functionally with Purchase, QA, R&D;, Production, and Vendors.
