Workday Payroll Architect
Summary:
The Workday Payroll Architect plays a pivotal role in designing, configuring, and maintaining a robust, compliant, and scalable payroll ecosystem across multiple entities. This position ensures accurate and timely payroll processing by owning the end-to-end configuration of payroll components, tax rules, and integrations. The architect collaborates closely with cross-functional teams—including Benefits, Absence, Compensation, and HCM—to align payroll processes with business needs and regulatory requirements. With a focus on continuous improvement, the role drives automation, enhances system efficiency, and supports innovation through emerging Workday capabilities such as AI-powered features. The architect is responsible for leading testing, deployment, and data integrity initiatives, ensuring seamless payroll operations and a high level of accuracy across all payroll cycles.
Location: Pune
Responsibilities:
- Own the architecture and configuration of the payroll ecosystem within Workday
- Design and maintain payroll eligibility rules, calculations, earning and deduction codes, pay components, and pay component groups across multiple legal entities
- Configure and manage garnishments, pre-tax/post-tax deductions, retroactive pay, off-cycle payrolls, bonuses, and year-end processing
- Develop and validate federal, state, and local tax configurations to ensure ongoing legal and regulatory compliance
- Collaborate with functional teams (Benefits, Absence, Compensation, HCM) to ensure seamless integration and accurate payroll execution
- Partner with Workday integration developers to support and maintain integrations impacting payroll data flow
- Build and validate custom reports using Standard, Advanced, and Matrix reporting tools
- Identify and implement improvements to enhance payroll accuracy, automation, efficiency, and employee experience
- Execute payroll inputs and complete payroll EIBs (Employee Information Builds)
- Lead configuration testing and deployment into the production Workday tenant
- Conduct regression testing for new Workday releases to ensure stability and continuity
- Perform regular data audits to uphold data integrity across all payroll modules
- Maintain and enhance payroll dashboards to support real-time visibility and decision-making
- Support the HCM Manager in developing change management plans and user guides for end users
- Test and evaluate emerging AI-driven features such as Workday’s Payroll Agent and contribute to innovation initiatives
Requirements
- 4-8 years of hands-on Workday Payroll configuration experience
- Proven experience with U.S. payroll tax regulations and compliance
- Strong understanding of integration points between Benefits, Absence, HCM, and Payroll systems
Preferred Qualifications:
- Workday Payroll Certification
- Experience working within a consulting environment and understanding of timesheet posting sequences
- Familiarity with prevailing wage payroll practices and compliance requirements
