About The Role

At Unreconciled, we're not your typical accounting firm. We're a energetic financial powerhouse that handles everything from basic bookkeeping to complex M&A; integrations, multi-million pound tax optimisations, and strategic CFO-level advisory. As a Financial Controller, you'll be at the heart of our operations, managing diverse financial scopes across multiple industries and jurisdictions.

This isn't a role where you'll do the same thing every day. One day you might be structuring a cross-border tax strategy that saves a client £300K, the next you're implementing project-based accounting for a video production company, and by Friday you're preparing board packs for a Series B startup. If you thrive in variety and love solving complex financial puzzles, this is your role.

A flagship mandate: building the finance function for a UK energy supplier

Alongside our client portfolio, this role has one anchor assignment that sets it apart: you will help build and run the finance operation for a new UK business energy supplier (electricity and gas) that we are taking from licence application through launch and scale. You'd be joining before the company supplies its first unit of energy — which means you get to design the controls, the close process, and the reporting from a blank sheet, and then run them as the business grows from zero to hundreds of thousands of business customers.

Energy Supply Is One Of The Most Demanding Finance Environments There Is, And We Don't Expect Candidates To Know It Already. To Help You Decide Whether It Excites You, Here Is What The Finance Function Of An Energy Supplier Actually Deals With

Revenue built on estimates. Customers are billed monthly or quarterly on metered consumption, and industry data arrives late and gets revised for months.

Revenue recognition means accrued (unbilled) income, estimation models, and true-ups — closer to IFRS 15 judgement work than simple invoicing. A costs stack like no other. Roughly a third of revenue is wholesale energy purchased on forward markets; another large slice is regulated network charges (distribution, transmission, balancing); another is government policy schemes (renewables obligations, capacity market, feed-in tariffs) — each with its own billing cycle, forecasting basis, and reconciliation. Cash and collateral discipline. Suppliers must post credit collateral with market bodies, ring-fence certain scheme payments monthly, and manage the working-capital gap between paying for energy and collecting from quarterly-billed customers. Cash forecasting is not a nice-to-have; it is the survival skill of the business. High-volume, reconciliation-heavy operations. Hundreds of thousands of meter points, industry data flows, direct debits and receivables, and a bad-debt provision that management watches weekly. The company's name — Unreconciled — is a joke you will stop finding funny. Regulatory reporting. Ofgem licence conditions bring reporting obligations, and the numbers you produce go in front of the regulator, lenders, and the board.

You will work with a detailed feasibility/financial model of this business from day one, and over time we'd want you to own its actuals-vs-model tracking,

monthly close, and cash forecast.

Key Responsibilities

Energy Supply Finance (flagship mandate)

Close & controls: Design and run the monthly close for the energy business, including unbilled revenue accruals, wholesale cost reconciliation, and industry-charge accruals Cash & collateral: Own the rolling cash forecast; track credit-cover requirements, scheme ring-fencing, and the billing-to-collection cycle Model vs actuals: Maintain the business feasibility model — track actual customer numbers, consumption, margin, and costs against plan, and explain variances to leadership Receivables & bad debt: Oversee high-volume billing integrity, collections performance, and the bad-debt provision Regulatory & audit support: Prepare financial submissions supporting licence obligations, and be the finance point of contact for auditors on the energy entity. Contribute to thought leadership and process innovation

What We're Looking For

A qualified accountant (CA / ACCA / CPA or equivalent) with strong controllership fundamentals — multi-entity close, controls, and reporting — who can operate with UK clients across time zones. Direct energy-sector experience is a genuine bonus but not expected; what we do need is comfort with estimation-heavy revenue, high transaction volumes, and cash-critical environments, plus the curiosity to learn a regulated industry deeply and fast. Experience in any of the following counts strongly in your favour: energy/utilities, commodities or trading environments, telecom or subscription businesses with high-volume billing, or UK/European regulated industries.

Skills: regulatory reporting, energy, estimation model, revenue built on estimates.
