Roles and Responsibilities of an MD Physician in a Psychiatric Hospital
The MD Physician is responsible for providing comprehensive medical care to psychiatric inpatients, ensuring timely assessment, treatment, stabilization of medical conditions, and coordination with the multidisciplinary mental health team.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Conduct a complete General Physical Examination (GPE) for all recent admissions and document medical findings.
- Assess and manage medical comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, respiratory diseases, cardiac conditions, infections, and other systemic illnesses.
- Evaluate patients for medical fitness at the time of admission and provide clearance for psychiatric treatment, including ECT when required.
- Diagnose and manage drug overdose, poisoning, intoxication, and withdrawal-related medical complications in coordination with the psychiatry team.
- Provide immediate treatment during medical emergencies, including:
- Cardiac emergencies
- Respiratory distress
- Seizures
- Anaphylaxis
- Shock
- Acute medical deterioration
- Manage and supervise patients requiring ICU care, including stabilization, monitoring, and coordination with intensivists or higher referral centres when necessary.
- Conduct daily medical rounds for inpatients and review patients with acute or chronic medical illnesses.
- Monitor vital signs, laboratory investigations, ECGs, and other diagnostic reports, and modify treatment plans accordingly.
- Review and prescribe medications for medical illnesses while identifying and managing drug interactions between psychiatric and medical medications.
- Assess and certify patients for ECT fitness and manage any medical complications related to the procedure.
- Coordinate referrals and consultations with other specialties such as Cardiology, Neurology, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Endocrinology,
and Pulmonology whenever required.
- Supervise the management of patients with infectious diseases and ensure appropriate infection prevention and control practices.
- Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and provide medical opinions during treatment planning.
Patient Safety and Quality
- Ensure early identification and management of medical complications in psychiatric patients.
- Support fall prevention, pressure sore prevention, nutrition assessment, hydration monitoring, and DVT prevention where indicated.
- Participate in code blue and emergency response activities.
- Ensure compliance with NABH standards, hospital protocols, infection control policies, and patient safety guidelines.
Documentation
- Maintain accurate and timely medical records.
- Document admission assessments, daily progress notes, treatment plans, referrals, discharge summaries, and death summaries (if applicable).
- Complete all medico-legal documentation as per hospital policy.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Coordinate with Psychiatrists, Nursing, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Radiology, Physiotherapy, Dietetics, and other departments for comprehensive patient care.
- Participate in departmental meetings, mortality and morbidity reviews, clinical audits, and quality improvement activities.
- Assist in developing and updating medical SOPs and clinical protocols.
- Provide clinical guidance and training to junior doctors, nurses, and allied healthcare staff.
- Participate in health awareness programmes, staff education sessions, and emergency preparedness drills.
On-Call Responsibilities
- Attend all medical emergencies within the hospital during duty hours or on-call periods.
- Provide telephonic or physical consultation whenever required.
- Ensure continuity of medical care during handover between shifts.
Pay: ₹75,000.00 - ₹125,000.00 per month
