Must-Have:
On-Prem Kubernetes: Production-level expertise deploying and operating Kubernetes clusters on virtualized infrastructure — VMware vSphere and/or Microsoft Hyper-V. Hands-on experience with self-managed distributions such as kubeadm, RKE2/Rancher, OpenShift, Talos, or k3s, including cluster bootstrapping, version upgrades, etcd backup and restore, and certificate lifecycle management.
Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) & Hybrid Cloud: Production experience operating AKS clusters as a peer workplace to on-prem Kubernetes — node pool design and upgrades, Azure CNI, workload identity, and managing the on-prem ↔ AKS posture with consistent tooling, GitOps, and policy. Working knowledge of the surrounding Azure services:



Azure Arc-enabled Kubernetes (bringing on-prem clusters under Azure management), Azure Key Vault, Azure Networking (VNets, ExpressRoute, Private Endpoints), and Entra ID / RBAC for federated identity.
Cluster Networking (Kubernetes layer): Deep understanding of Kubernetes-native networking: CNI plugins (Calico, Cilium, Flannel), software load balancing (MetalLB, kube-vip), ingress controllers (NGINX, Traefik), Kubernetes Services, cluster DNS (CoreDNS), and NetworkPolicy. Scope is limited to the Kubernetes platform layer; physical/data-centre networking is handled by a separate team.
Persistent Storage: Experience with storage solutions for Kubernetes across both on-prem and AKS — on-prem: Rook/Ceph, Longhorn, OpenEBS, Portworx, or CSI drivers for SAN/NAS systems (NFS, iSCSI, SMB) and hypervisor-native CSI (vSphere CSI, Azure Stack HCI / CSI for Hyper-V); AKS: Azure Disk CSI, Azure Files CSI, Azure Blob CSI, and Azure NetApp Files.
