Job Summary
Position Overview
We are looking for an energetic and detail-oriented Application Support Engineer (L2 + L3) to support application maintenance in an SRE-driven operating model. This role combines second-line and third-line support, including incident troubleshooting, configuration management, source‑code–aware tasks, stability checks, and ongoing optimization activities. The ideal candidate will help ensure application stability, performance, and continuous improvement while supporting Mainframe platforms, COBOL-based batch applications, CICS online transactions, and DB2 database components. This is an excellent role for early‑career engineers eager to grow into SRE, Mainframe Engineering, or Platform Reliability roles.

1. Incident & Service Request Handling (L2 + L3 Scope)
Monitor alerts, batch failures, and dashboards; acknowledge and respond within defined SLAs/SLOs.
Perform initial troubleshooting using JES logs, SYSOUT/SYSPRINT, DB2 queries, and runbooks.
Restore services by executing recommended actions (job reruns, JCL corrections, dataset fixes, region resets).
Escalate complex issues to senior engineers or development teams with clear documentation.
Maintain accurate incident notes, timelines,



and resolution steps.
2. Application Source Code & Content Operations
Support configuration, parameter, and dataset updates across Mainframe applications.
Assist in code/config deployments during release windows, including pre‑checks, validation, and rollback support.
Maintain JCL streams, load modules, and version-controlled artifacts (Endevor/Changeman).
Execute tasks to keep application components current, optimized, and stable.
3. Application Stability & Daily Operational Checks
Perform scheduled application health checks, batch monitoring, CICS region validations, and log audits.
Ensure availability and smooth functioning of COBOL programs, DB2 calls, and online transaction workflows.
Validate scheduled jobs, dataset availability, indexing, backups, and overall service health metrics.
4. SRE-Conscious Operations & Automation Participation
Follow SRE practices such as runbook execution, error-budget awareness, and RCA discipline.
Identify recurring issues and propose automation or runbook improvements.
Contribute to Knowledge Base (KB) articles and troubleshooting guides.
Support continuous improvement initiatives across reliability, observability, and operational efficiency.

Mainframe Core: COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, VSAM – debugging, job analysis, and dataset operations.
Utilities: ISPF, SDSF, File‑Aid, Abend‑Aid, SORT utilities, CA7/Control-M for batch management.
Change Management: Endevor, Changeman for code packaging and promotions.
Monitoring: OMEGAMON, Mainview, Sysview, and SMF log analysis (read‑only).
Freeware/Open-source tools: Git (documentation), Postman/Notepad++ (auxiliary), curl/OpenSSL for interface testing.
Skill Requirements
Mandatory Requirements
2–4 years of experience in application support, production support, or software maintenance.
Basic understanding of:
COBOL program flows, JCL structure, and batch cycle processing
CICS transaction behaviors and region troubleshooting
DB2 basics – ability to run simple SELECT queries
VSAM dataset handling and scheduling workflows
Job reruns, abend analysis, and system log review
Familiarity with Endevor/Changeman for code navigation and versioning.
Solid analytical and troubleshooting mindset.
Willingness to work in rotational shifts and learn rapidly.
Good to Have
Exposure to OMEGAMON, Mainview, Sysview, or similar monitoring tools.
Understanding of REXX/CLIST scripting and automation basics.
Knowledge of CICS routing, DB2 performance indicators, and dataset tuning.
Awareness of ITIL processes (Incident, Change, Problem).
Experience analyzing dumps, abends, and transaction traces.
