Job Description

Senior Azure Data Platform Engineer

Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Azure Data Platform Engineer to design, build, and manage scalable, secure, and high-performance data platforms on Azure.

This role requires strong expertise in:

- Azure platform engineering (infra + networking)
- Azure Synapse / data services
- Databricks platform administration (key focus)
- Infrastructure as Code and platform automation
- Strong understanding of event-driven architecture and pub/sub patterns
- Solid understanding of FinOps practices, including cost allocation, budgeting, and optimization across cloud resources
- Experience with cost management tools (Azure Cost Management, budgets, alerts) and driving accountability across engineering teams.

You will work across cloud infrastructure, data platform, and Databricks environments, ensuring reliability, security, and scalability.

Key Responsibilities

Azure Platform & Landing Zone

- Design and manage Azure landing zones:
- Subscription and resource group strategy
- Governance using Azure Policy & RBAC





- Maintain multi-environment setup (dev/test/prod) with consistency
- Implement cost governance (budgets, tagging, cost optimization)
- Azure RBAC, policies, and access control

Azure Networking & Connectivity

- Design secure network architecture:
- Virtual Networks (VNet), subnets, NSG
- Private Endpoints / Private Link
- Azure Firewall & DNS

- Enable secure connectivity:

- On-prem integration (VPN / ExpressRoute)
- Cross-cloud connectivity (if applicable)

- Ensure network isolation for data platforms

Azure Data Platform (Synapse / ADF)

- Setup and administer Azure Synapse Analytics:
- Workspaces, integration runtimes, linked services
- Security (RBAC, Managed Identity)

- Build and monitor ADF pipelines
- Optimize performance and troubleshoot pipelines

Databricks Platform Administration

- Design and manage Azure Databricks workspace architecture:
- Workspace provisioning and configuration
- Cluster sizing, autoscaling, and cost optimization

- Administer:

- Unity Catalog (governance, access control)
- Job scheduling using Databricks Workflows

- Integrate Databricks with:

- Azure Key Vault (secret scopes)
- External APIs and enterprise systems
- AI / LLM services (basic integrations)

- Manage:

- Environment isolation (dev/test/prod)
- Workspace security and access controls

- Perform capacity planning, monitoring, and performance tuning

Infrastructure as Code & Automation

- Develop reusable Terraform / ARM / Bicep modules
- Automate environment provisioning via CI/CD pipelines
- Implement drift detection and configuration management

Security & Compliance

- Implement:
- Azure RBAC, Managed Identity, Service Principals
- Key Vault for secrets and encryption

- Ensure adherence to:

- Security best practices
- Compliance frameworks (HIPAA/enterprise standards)

Monitoring & Reliability

- Implement observability using:
- Azure Monitor, Log Analytics

- Define SLAs/SLOs and monitoring strategies
- Troubleshoot platform issues across:

- Networking
- Compute
- Data services

- Conduct platform performance reviews and capacity planning




- Strong documentation habits — this role will be producing documentation that currently doesn't exist.
- Self-directed and collaborative; able to work with a client stakeholder as the primary knowledge source.

Core Requirements

- 5-8 years of overall experience in platform engineering / cloud engineering
- 4-6 years of hands-on experience with Azure.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Relevant Azure certifications (e.g., Azure Administrator Associate, Azure Solutions Architect) are highly preferred.
- Strong background in building internal developer platforms or platform-as-a-service capabilities

- Strong understanding of:
- Databricks architecture (control plane vs data plane)

- Hands-on experience with:

- Cluster sizing, autoscaling, cost optimization
- Unity Catalog (data governance)
- Workflows / job scheduling

- Integration with:

- Azure Key Vault
- External APIs

- Exposure to:

- LLM / AI integration (basic level)

Security & Identity

- RBAC, Managed Identity, Service Principals
- Azure Key Vault
- Secure data access patterns

Infrastructure as Code

- Terraform (preferred)
- CI/CD-based infra provisioning

Monitoring & Troubleshooting

- Azure Monitor, Log Analytics
- Platform-level troubleshooting (network, access, performance)

Azure Event Grid

- Hands-on experience with Azure Event Grid including custom topics, subscriptions, and event routing
- Experience integrating Event Grid with Azure Functions, Logic Apps, and Service Bus/Event Hubs

Good to Have Skills

- AKS / Kubernetes exposure
- Databricks VNet injection setup
- Multi-cloud experience
- Exposure to healthcare / HIPAA environments

Soft Skills
