Thumbnail Designer Knowabit is a business and finance YouTube channel producing long-form documentary videos about companies, markets, and the people running them. A single script takes weeks to research and write, and the videos run 20 to 40 minutes. The thumbnail determines whether that work reaches an audience at all, so we're looking for a designer who treats it as its own discipline rather than a final production step. About the role:
You would work directly with the writer and the editor, joining each video at the script stage instead of receiving a finished brief. Thumbnail and title get decided together in our process, and we expect the designer to be in that conversation. Responsibilities:
Develop 3 to 5 distinct thumbnail concepts per video, beginning while the video is still in edit
Deliver final files at 1280x720, under 2MB, with layered source files handed over for future edits
Run A/B tests on new uploads and redesign thumbnails on the back catalogue where click-through rate is underperforming, then report on what each swap did to impressions and CTR
Maintain enough visual consistency across the channel that a Knowabit thumbnail is recognisable in a subscription feed, without every video looking like the last one Requirements:
A portfolio of thumbnails that ran on a live channel, ideally in business, finance, technology, or documentary content, with performance data where you have it
Advanced Photoshop skills. Specifically, cutouts, colour grading, and lighting work at the level where a composited subject matches the background it sits on
Sourcing and licensing your own stock and archival imagery
Familiarity with this category of YouTube and a explicit point of view on why certain thumbnails in it outperform others
Comfort with fast turnaround and multiple rounds of revision. We iterate heavily on every video, and concepts get killed late.
Nice to have: Motion or After Effects experience for animated end screens and channel art. Terms
Freelance to start, paid per video, moving to a monthly retainer once volume is consistent. Fully remote, open to designers in any timezone. A long-term working relationship is the goal here, not a one-off project.
