Job Summary

We are looking for a hands-on Technical Lead to own the technical design and delivery of client-facing and internal modules across .NET, modern JavaScript frontends, and cloud. You will turn functional requirements into designs that are secure, scalable, and maintainable and then build a substantial part of them yourself.

This is a coding role first and a leadership role second. Expect to spend the majority of your time in the codebase: writing the hard parts, reviewing pull requests, unblocking your team, and holding the quality line. You will work closely with the Solution Architect and delivery leadership on the wider architecture, and you will be the person who makes sure it actually lands in production the way it was designed.

You will also be hands-on in how we adopt AI/ML and LLM-based capabilities across our delivery portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Design & Delivery

- Own the technical design of assigned modules and applications application logic, integration points, data model, and deployment approach.
- Translate functional requirements and user stories into technical designs, sequence diagrams, API contracts, and data models.
- Contribute to solution-level architecture decisions and document trade-offs for the options considered and rejected.
- Break down features into tasks, estimate effort realistically, and drive them to completion within sprint commitments.
- Design with non-functional requirements in mind from the start: performance, scalability, security, observability, and cost.
- Execute staged modernisation of legacy applications (e.g., .NET Framework / .NET Core current LTS) under an agreed migration plan.
- Apply and enforce engineering standards: coding guidelines, branching strategy, code review expectations, test coverage, and definition of done.

Hands-On Engineering

- Write production code for the complex, high-risk, or performance-critical parts of the system.
- Build proofs of concept, reference implementations, and reusable components for the team.
- Review pull requests with substance correctness, security, performance, and readability, not just style.
- Diagnose production issues: performance bottlenecks, memory pressure, N+1 queries, cache behaviour, and concurrency problems.
- Keep CI/CD, automated testing, and quality gates working and taken seriously by the team.

Cloud & Platform

- Build and operate solutions on Azure or AWS compute, storage, networking, identity, and secrets management.
- Implement containerisation and deployment pipelines where appropriate (Docker, and Kubernetes/AKS/EKS where in use).
- Instrument applications for observability logging, metrics, tracing, alerting and act on what they show.
- Flag cost implications of design choices and implement agreed optimisations.

AI/ML & LLM Solutions

- Build LLM-backed features: RAG pipelines, chunking and embedding strategy, vector store integration, retrieval quality, and prompt and context design.
- Understand the practical trade-offs between prompt engineering, RAG,

and fine-tuning, and pick sensibly for the problem at hand.
- Handle the real constraints of LLM systems: latency, token cost, rate limits, caching, fallback behaviour, and graceful degradation.
- Implement evaluation and guardrails groundedness checks, hallucination mitigation, PII handling, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints.
- Have an informed view on where AI/ML genuinely adds value and where it does not.
- Work with data engineering on the pipelines and data quality these features depend on.

Team Leadership & Mentoring

- Lead a team of 38 engineers day to day: task allocation, standups, unblocking, and progress visibility.
- Mentor mid-level and junior engineers through code review, pairing, and design discussions.
- Own the technical quality of what your team ships, including defect triage and release readiness.
- Support technical hiring interviewing and candidate evaluation.
- Contribute to internal knowledge sharing, tech talks, and reusable IP.

Client & Delivery Support

- Join technical discussions and requirement clarification sessions with clients where needed.
- Provide effort estimates and technical inputs for proposals and solution approach documents.
- Explain technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to project managers, clients, and stakeholders.

Required Skills

Must Have Depth Expected

- 69 years in software engineering, with production systems you have personally built and shipped.
- Strong .NET / C# ASP.NET Core, Web API, Entity Framework Core, async programming, dependency injection, and current LTS versions.
- Solid working experience with one cloud platform Azure or AWS. Azure preferred (App Service, Functions, Azure SQL / PostgreSQL, Service Bus, Key Vault, Entra ID, Application Insights). AWS equivalents equally acceptable.
- At least one modern frontend framework in depth Angular or React plus TypeScript. Working familiarity with the other is a plus.
- Node.js for services, tooling, or BFF layers.
- Databases: solid SQL (SQL Server / PostgreSQL), data modelling, indexing, and query tuning. Awareness of NoSQL and when it fits.
- Design and architectural patterns: REST API design, layered/clean architecture, messaging and queues, caching strategies, and a working understanding of microservices and event-driven design including when a monolith is the better answer.
- Security fundamentals: OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, RBAC, secrets management, OWASP Top 10.
- DevOps: Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions, CI/CD pipelines, Git branching strategies, Docker.

Must Have Working Understanding

- Practical understanding of AI/ML concepts and the ML lifecycle.

- Hands-on exposure to LLM-based application development RAG, embeddings, vector databases (pgvector, Azure AI Search, Pinecone, or similar), and orchestration frameworks (LangChain, Semantic Kernel, or equivalent).
- Familiarity with major model providers and the trade-offs between hosted APIs and self-hosted/open models.
- Python for AI/ML, scripting, and data work.
- Exposure to infrastructure-as-code (Bicep/ARM/Terraform).

Non-Technical

- Clear written communication your design notes and PR comments matter as much as your code.
- Ability to explain a technical trade-off to a project manager and to a junior engineer, on the same day, without changing your answer.
- Comfortable being challenged and equally comfortable changing your mind when the argument is better.
- Ownership: you follow a decision through to production, not to the end of the design phase.

Qualification

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Master's is a plus.
- Equivalent demonstrable experience will be considered in place of formal qualifications.

Preferred (Added Advantage)

- Cloud certification Azure Developer Associate (AZ-204), Azure Administrator (AZ-104), Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305), or the AWS equivalents.
- Experience in an IT services or consulting environment with multiple concurrent clients.
- Exposure to data engineering and analytics Azure Synapse, Databricks, PySpark, dbt, Power BI.
- Experience running containerised workloads in production.
- Experience shipping an AI/LLM feature to production, including how it was evaluated.
- Open-source contributions, technical writing, or conference speaking.

What Success Looks Like in This Role

First 90 days

- Productive in the codebase and reviewing pull requests independently.
- Understood the module landscape you own and identified its top technical risks with evidence.
- Delivered at least one design document and one feature shipped end to end.

First 6–12 months

- Engineering standards consistently followed by your team, with review and test discipline visibly improved.
- Measurable improvement in delivery predictability, defect escape rate, or system performance.
- At least one AI/LLM capability built, evaluated, and delivered to production or a credible pilot.
- One or more engineers visibly levelled up under your mentorship.

What We Offer

- Real ownership of the technical design and delivery of the systems you work on.
- Direct access to leadership and a short path from decision to implementation.
- Room to grow into a Solution Architect role, with the support to get there.
- Hands-on work on modern cloud and AI engineering, not maintenance.
- Sponsorship for certifications and continuous learning.
- A collaborative, engineering-led environment.
