We support everything from distributed makerspace management systems to complex online learning platforms designed to give engineers the tools they need to be successful in their post-college pursuits. We’re constantly innovating and leveraging the latest technology to achieve our goals.

Our team is looking for highly motivated and skilled student software development engineers to assist in the design, (hardware and/or software), troubleshooting, debugging, integration and implementation of software and hardware based systems. The software solutions we build directly impact student learning, research, and administrative systems.

A day in the life

You’ll work on our Makerspace Management system (MSM), developing an API-first, distributed system that powers makerspaces across campus. Our system is designed to track makerspace visits by students, faculty, and staff. We’re working on a recent version of the system that will automatically check end users have the requisite training to access resources and will even integrate with resources directly, giving end users the best self-service experience.

You’ll be building a system that helps democratize access to making resources across campus, interacting with our campus partners via site visits and interacting directly with our customers.

What you’ll do

- Participate in the design, implementation, and deployment of successful college- & campus-wide systems and services to support our academic & research mission.
- Participate in the definition of secure, scalable, and low-latency services and efficient physical processes.
- Work across teams to deliver top-notch software systems.
- Functionally decompose complex problems into simple, straight-forward solutions.
- Understand system interdependencies and limitations.
- Share knowledge in performance, scalability, enterprise system architecture, and engineering best practices.

You (basic Qualifications)

- Are experienced in working in a Linux/Unix setting.
- Are experienced in at least one programming language.
- Know how to use a debugger.
- Have some experience writing software tests with a testing framework (e.g. pytest, Jtest).
- Know Git basics.
- Have a fundamental understanding of servers and APIs (e.g. HTTP, REST).

You Also Have (preferred Qualifications)

- Server design experience.
- Database design experience.
- UX/UI design experience.

It’s a Plus If You (extra Qualifications)

- Are experienced in Python.
- Are experienced in JavaScript.
- Have experience with the Flask microframework.
- Have experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
- Have experience with GitLab.
- Have used Atlassian tools before (Jira / Confluence).
- Have experience with Raspbian & Raspberry Pi’s.
- Have designed or developed firmware.
- Have experience with the agile methodology of work.

Compensation We value your time and work and strongly believe you should be compensated accordingly. All employees start at the current minimum wage and are raised to the base pay rate for this position upon completion of a two month probationary period. Further raises are provided based on a combination of merit & time, up to the current maximum rate*.

- The maximum pay rate is set by University Human Resources. For student roles in Engineering IT, exceptions to the maximum pay rate are not possible. From time to time we re-evaluate base pay and update it accordingly to be in line with current industry trends.

Rules & expectations During your time with us, you will be expected to maintain satisfactory academic performance. Satisfactory academic performance is defined by the University as maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. We additionally require that you maintain a minimum semester GPA of 2.0 . You will have scheduling flexibility to ensure you have as much time to study as needed.
