About TREND@YKA

TREND (The Research, Evidence and Narrative Development Unit) is Youth Ki Awaaz’s research programme. We run Yoot, a WhatsApp-based polling infrastructure with 15,000+ young Indians; CHORUS, a discourse analysis framework studying years of citizen writing; and publish research to translate young people ’s expressions into evidence. We are building something that does not yet exist in India: a national cultural evidence and narrative hub for young people, run with them and for them.

About the Role

You will work closely with the Head of Research to run and contribute to shaping the day-to-day of TREND’ s research programme. This includes:

- Analyse survey and field data on a day-to-day basis, and translate it into formats required by internal teams and external partners (reports, briefs, dashboards, story inputs)
- Work with raw and processed datasets to generate clear insights tailored to different needs
- Coordinating survey and poll design, web-based and on-ground data collection, and analysis
- Working with YKA’s Story Lab to connect research findings with the writing community
- Conducting interviews, focus group discussions, and community consultations
- Contributing to CHORUS discourse analysis and The Undercurrent (our monthly research digest)




- Learning and experimenting with unorthodox research methods, such as community-led approaches, participatory design, narrative-based data work

This is a research role rooted in the development sector and community engagement rather than academia. You will be expected to think structurally and stay genuinely curious about what young Indians are experiencing and aspiring for, and translate that into meaningful, actionable insight.

Who Should Apply

- You have completed a Masters degree (or equivalent experience) in social sciences, public policy, development studies, economics, media studies, or a related field
- You have 3-4 years of prior experience of working on research projects that involved working with human participants, not just desk research. Field visits, audit surveys, community interviews, participatory workshops, or grassroots documentation all count
- You have designed a research study yourself or as part of a team, whether a thesis or a project, and have made decisions about methodology, sampling, and instrument design.
- Running a large-sample survey (web-based or in-person) is a plus
- Working familiarity with R, Python, or any data analysis tool and survey platforms is expected; more importantly, you are comfortable learning new tools as required by the work
- You are comfortable working with ongoing datasets (cleaning and scientifically analysing) and translating findings into outputs required by different teams (community, editorial, client-facing)




- You can write clearly and concisely for different audiences in English and Hindi.
- Knowledge of other Indian languages is a strong plus
- Prior professional or project-based experience in a research, policy, or civil society organisation (including community organisations, social movements, collectives, etc.) is expected
- You are drawn to research that is participatory, community-driven, and oriented toward change (including campaigns, interventions, etc) rather than publication alone

You should be able to hold your own methodologically while staying open to approaches you haven’t tried before.
