About CSIF The Centre for Sophisticated Instruments and Facilities (CSIF) at IIT Bombay houses over 180 advanced research instruments and facilities that support researchers from academia, industry, startups, and government organizations across India.

The Advanced Rheology Facility is one of CSIF's specialized laboratories, providing state-of-the-art instrumentation for rheological characterization of polymers, composites, biomaterials, pharmaceuticals, food products, coatings, adhesives, cementitious materials, suspensions, emulsions, and other complex fluids.

Role Summary The Project Assistant will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Advanced Rheology Facility, providing scientific and technical support to researchers, and ensuring efficient utilization of sophisticated rheological instrumentation.

The role requires a technically competent and research-oriented professional with hands-on expertise in rheological characterization of materials and the ability to support users from academia, industry, startups, and R&D; organizations.

The selected candidate will work closely with faculty members, researchers, students, industrial users, and technical teams to deliver high-quality analytical services while supporting research, training, and facility development initiatives.

The role responsibilities are as follows

1. Instrument Operation & Facility Management
- Operate and manage advanced rheological characterization instruments including rotational rheometers, capillary rheometers, Dynamic Mechanical Analyzers (DMA), and associated accessories.

- User Support & Scientific Consultation

- Interact with faculty members, researchers, students, startups, MSMEs, and industrial clients to understand analytical requirements.

- Equipment Maintenance & Quality Assurance: Perform calibration, preventive maintenance,



and performance verification of instruments. Maintain equipment logs, calibration records, maintenance history, and quality documentation.
- User Training & Laboratory Operations: Conduct user training programs on instrument operation, software, and data analysis. Prepare and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), user manuals, and safety guidelines.
- Research & Facility Development: Support collaborative research projects, proposal development, publications, workshops, and outreach initiatives. Develop new testing methodologies and contribute to expanding the capabilities of the Advanced Rheology Facility.
- Administrative Responsibilities: Manage sample workflow, bookings, inventory, consumables, and documentation. Maintain facility utilization records and contribute to operational reports and performance metrics.

Essential Qualification

- Bachelor's / Master's / Ph.D. in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a closely related discipline
- Relevant experience in a research laboratory, analytical facility, or industrial R&D; workplace.
- Candidates with hands-on experience in rheological characterization and operation of advanced rheological instrumentation will be preferred.

Technical Skills

- Operation of rotational rheometers and capillary rheometers
- Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA)
- Rheology of polymers, suspensions, emulsions, gels, and complex fluids
- Fluid mechanics and transport phenomena
- Viscoelasticity and oscillatory rheology
- Experimental design and statistical data analysis
- Scientific data interpretation and technical report writing
- Instrument calibration and preventive maintenance
- Working knowledge of rheometers from Anton Paar, TA Instruments, Netzsch, Thermo Fisher, Malvern Panalytical, or equivalent platforms
- Microsoft Office Suite
