Job Title: Project Fellow - Centre for Archaeological Research

Reports to: Prof. Kalyan Sekhar Chakraborty

Duration: 1 year starting August 2026 with a potential extension for 2nd year

Nature and days of work: Full time

Location: Ashoka University Campus, Sonipat. Fieldwork during the tenure of the project will be carried out at multiple locations throughout Haryana.

About CIAR

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Archaeological Research (CIAR) at Ashoka University is a facility that brings together archaeology and the sciences together to offer new perspectives that will deepen the study of the Indian past. It carries out interdisciplinary field-based projects throughout India, especially related to the archaeology of forested spaces.

Simultaneously, it presents a pedagogy drawn from the sciences and humanities for teaching courses on traditional and up-to-date archaeology that imparts field knowledge of archaeological sites, methods, and the diverse landscapes of India.

About the Project

The project, 'An assessment of the long-term impact of climate change and water management practices of the pastoral communities of Haryana', with Prof. Kalyan Sekhar Chakraborty, Assistant Professor of History, Ashoka University as the Principal Investigator, is funded by the Haryana State Higher Education Council. This project investigates how long-term climate variability has shaped pastoral subsistence, mobility, and water management in Haryana,



and how these historical trajectories inform contemporary herding strategies under accelerating climate stress. The outcome of the proposed project would be multiple publications in reputed international and national journals.

Responsibilities

- The CIAR seeks one (1) project fellow to assist the PI in undertaking the necessary ethnographic survey, visit archaeological sites and repository to collect samples, prepare samples for lab analysis, carryout analysis at labs in different parts of India, assist in drafting reports and papers.

Qualifications

- The preference will be given to candidates with master's degree in Archaeology or Anthropology, a specialization in Archaeozoology and/or Archaeological science is desirable. Some experience in ethnographic survey and use of GIS tools is preferable. Candidates from Haryana, or experience in archaeology of Haryana, are preferable.
- Knowledge of English, Hindi and Haryanvi is essential for this position.
