Full-Stack Developer (Remote, Unpaid)
About The Aroha Project The Aroha Project is an open, impact-driven initiative dedicated to transforming how health occurrence and disease distribution data are explored, analysed, and understood. Our mission is to bridge the gap between complex public health datasets and meaningful insights by building an intelligent, interactive platform that combines geospatial visualisation, epidemiological analytics, and artificial intelligence.
The platform enables users to visualise disease trends through dynamic maps, explore health statistics across regions, identify patterns in disease occurrence, and interact with an AI-powered chatbot that can answer public health and epidemiology-related queries. By integrating modern web technologies with AI, we aim to make health information more accessible to students, researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the general public.
As a Full-Stack Developer, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining the platform's core components. You will work closely with AI engineers, data engineers, designers, and other developers to build scalable, secure, and user-friendly applications that can support large datasets and advanced AI-powered features.
Responsibilities
As a Full-Stack Developer, you will be responsible for:
- Designing, developing, and maintaining both front-end and back-end components of the platform.
- Building responsive, intuitive, and accessible user interfaces that provide an excellent user experience across desktop and mobile devices.
- Developing scalable RESTful APIs and backend services to power application features and data pipelines.
- Designing and managing relational and NoSQL databases while ensuring data integrity, performance, and scalability.
- Integrating geospatial data visualisation components using mapping libraries and interactive dashboards.
- Collaborating with AI engineers to integrate Large Language Models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines,
and AI-powered chatbot functionality into the platform.
- Optimising application performance, database queries, API response times, and overall system efficiency.
- Implementing authentication, authorisation, and security best practices to ensure reliable and secure access to the platform.
- Writing clean, maintainable, and well-documented code following industry best practices.
- Participating in code reviews, technical discussions, and architectural decisions to continuously improve the platform.
- Troubleshooting bugs, resolving production issues, and contributing to ongoing feature enhancements.
- Working collaboratively with a distributed team using Git-based development workflows.
Required Qualifications
We're looking for candidates who have:
- Strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
- Experience with modern front-end frameworks such as React, Vue.js, or Next.js.
- Experience building backend applications using Python with frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, or Django.
- Good understanding of RESTful API design, backend architecture, and client-server communication.
- Experience working with SQL or NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, or Firebase.
- Familiarity with Git, GitHub, version control workflows, and collaborative software development.
- Experience deploying applications using cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Azure, Vercel, or similar services.
- Understanding of software engineering principles, scalable application architecture, and clean code practices.
- Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a remote collaborative environment.
Preferred Qualifications The following skills are not mandatory but will be considered a strong advantage:
- Experience integrating AI applications or Large Language Models (LLMs) into web applications.
- Familiarity with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), vector databases, embeddings, or AI orchestration frameworks.
- Experience with Docker, containerization, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps workflows.
- Knowledge of geospatial technologies such as Leaflet, Mapbox, OpenLayers, or GIS concepts.
- Experience working with healthcare, epidemiology, public health, or data visualisation projects.
- Contributions to open-source projects or personal full-stack applications.
What You'll Gain
Although this is an unpaid position, contributors will have the opportunity to:
- Work on a meaningful project that addresses real-world public health challenges.
- Gain hands-on experience building production-scale AI-enabled applications.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team working across AI, backend engineering, frontend development, and data analytics.
- Strengthen your portfolio by contributing to an impactful open-source initiative.
- Develop practical experience with contemporary full-stack technologies, cloud deployment, and AI integration.
- Receive recognition for your contributions and expand your professional network within the AI and software engineering community.
Position Details
Role: Full-Stack Developer
Work Mode: Remote
Compensation: Unpaid
Schedule: Flexible working hours
Experience Level: Mid-level preferred
Commitment
We are seeking contributors who can commit consistent time and actively participate in developing the platform. Because this role involves close collaboration and ownership of important features, applicants who are currently employed full-time or heavily committed to another software development position may find it difficult to meet the expected level of involvement.
