Lab Technician Roles & Responsibilities

1. Sample Collection & Processing

- Collect blood, urine, and other clinical specimens following standard protocols.
- Ensure proper patient identification before sample collection.
- Label, store, and transport samples accurately to avoid errors.
- Perform venipuncture safely while maintaining patient comfort.

2. Laboratory Testing

- Perform routine laboratory investigations as prescribed by the consultant.
- Operate laboratory analyzers and diagnostic equipment efficiently.
- Validate test results before reporting.
- Report critical values immediately to the treating doctor.

3. Quality Control

- Perform daily internal quality control (IQC) procedures.
- Participate in external quality assurance (EQA) programs, where applicable.
- Maintain accuracy and reliability of laboratory results.
- Follow NABH/NABL quality standards and SOPs.

4. Equipment Maintenance

- Ensure laboratory equipment is calibrated and functioning properly.
- Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Coordinate with vendors for servicing and repairs.
- Maintain equipment maintenance and calibration records.

5. Documentation & Records

- Maintain laboratory registers and electronic records accurately.
- Ensure timely entry of test reports into the Hospital Information System (HIS).
- Preserve laboratory records as per statutory requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.

6. Inventory Management

- Monitor stock levels of reagents, consumables, and laboratory supplies.
- Raise timely indent requests to avoid stock shortages.
- Check expiry dates and ensure proper storage of reagents.
- Minimize wastage through productive inventory management.

7. Infection Control & Safety

- Follow biomedical waste management guidelines.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols.




- Maintain cleanliness and safety within the laboratory.

8. Patient Care

- Explain sample collection procedures to patients.
- Handle patients courteously and professionally.
- Address patient concerns related to laboratory procedures.
- Ensure minimal waiting time for sample collection and reporting.

9. Compliance

- Comply with hospital policies, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality of laboratory data.
- Participate in audits and quality improvement initiatives.

10. Team Coordination

- Coordinate effectively with doctors, nurses, and other departments.
- Support health check-up camps and special screening programs when required.
- Assist during emergency situations requiring urgent laboratory investigations.
- Participate in departmental meetings and training sessions.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

- Turnaround Time (TAT) for laboratory reports.
- Sample rejection/error rate.
- Quality control compliance.
- Equipment uptime.
- Inventory accuracy.
- Patient satisfaction.

Qualification

- Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) or Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT).
- Valid registration (where applicable).
- 1–3 years of relevant hospital laboratory experience preferred.

- Knowledge of laboratory techniques and equipment.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Attention to detail and analytical ability.
- Basic computer and HIS/LIS knowledge.
