About the Role

We're looking for an Engineering Manager who combines strong technical depth with the ability to build and lead high-performing engineering teams.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role. While you will mentor engineers and drive execution, your primary responsibility is to ensure our systems are scalable, reliable, maintainable, and built with sound engineering principles.

We care far more about engineering judgement than familiarity with any specific programming language or framework.

What You'll Do

Technical Leadership

- Own the technical design of backend systems.
- Guide engineers in designing scalable and maintainable solutions.
- Review architecture and challenge technical decisions where required.
- Ensure engineering standards are consistently followed.
- Drive improvements in reliability, performance, security, and scalability.
- Lead technical discussions during planning and implementation.
- Participate in design reviews and code reviews.

Engineering Execution

- Break large initiatives into deliverable milestones.
- Estimate engineering effort and identify technical risks.
- Ensure predictable delivery without compromising quality.
- Remove technical blockers.
- Drive production stability and operational excellence.
- Participate in incident reviews and define preventive actions.

People Leadership

- Mentor Backend Engineers.
- Conduct regular technical coaching sessions.
- Build engineering capability within the team.
- Support hiring and technical interviews.
- Foster ownership and accountability.

- Create an environment of continuous learning.

Must Have Technical Skills

Database Design

Strong understanding of

- Relational database design
- Normalization and denormalization
- Query optimization
- Index design
- Transactions
- Isolation levels
- Locking
- Deadlocks
- Data consistency
- Data modelling

You should be comfortable identifying performance bottlenecks and designing schemas that scale.

Concurrency

Solid understanding of

- Race conditions
- Lost updates
- Duplicate processing
- Thread safety
- Atomic operations
- Optimistic and pessimistic locking
- Idempotency
- Distributed locking
- High-concurrency systems

You should be able to explain how concurrent systems fail and how to prevent those failures.

Asynchronous Systems

Experience designing

- Queue-based architectures
- Background workers
- Retry mechanisms
- Dead Letter Queues
- Event-driven systems
- Scheduling systems
- Workflow orchestration
- Long-running processes
- Failure recovery

System Design Strong experience designing systems with consideration for:

- Scalability
- Availability
- Reliability
- Fault tolerance
- Horizontal scaling
- API design
- Distributed systems
- Caching strategies
- Observability
- Monitoring
- Disaster recovery
- Performance optimization

Production Engineering

Experience with

- Root cause analysis
- Incident management
- Performance tuning
- Monitoring and alerting
- Logging
- Capacity planning
- Release management

Leadership Competencies You should be able to:

- Mentor engineers through technical challenges rather than simply providing solutions.
- Make sound engineering decisions with incomplete information.
- Balance delivery speed with long-term maintainability.
- Influence through technical reasoning rather than authority.
- Encourage healthy technical debates and guide the team toward well-reasoned decisions.
- Build a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement.

Preferred Technical Experience Experience with one or more of the following is desirable:

- Java / Kotlin
- Go
- Python
- Node.js / TypeScript
- MySQL or PostgreSQL
- Redis
- Kafka / RabbitMQ / BullMQ
- Docker
- Kubernetes
- AWS
- CI/CD pipelines
- Infrastructure as Code
- Observability platforms

Technology choices are secondary to engineering fundamentals. What Success Looks Like A successful Engineering Manager:

- Designs systems that are simple, reliable, and scalable.
- Anticipates technical risks before implementation begins.
- Builds engineering teams that consistently deliver high-quality software.
- Improves engineering practices through mentoring and example.
- Creates systems that are resilient to failures rather than reacting to them.
- Balances business priorities with sound technical decisions.
- Builds engineers who can eventually operate independently.
