Badrinath, where Vishnu meditated as Badrinarayan, sits at 10,279 feet between twin peaks. Kedarnath houses a Jyotirlinga at 11,755 feet, where the Pandavas sought Shiva's forgiveness.
Gangotri (10,200 feet) marks where Ganga descended to earth through Shiva's locks. Yamunotri (10,797 feet) enshrines the source of Yamuna, daughter of Surya. Completing this circuit while the temples are open (May-November) is considered the ultimate Hindu spiritual journey, granting liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
