Job Title
US Conventional Mortgage Underwriter
Job Summary
The US Conventional Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for analyzing mortgage loan
applications, supporting documentation, and credit reports to determine borrower eligibil
ity for conventional mortgage programs. The role ensures compliance with Fannie Mae,
Freddie Mac, and other regulatory guidelines while mitigating lending risk and facilitating
timely decision-
making. Candidates must demonstrate strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a t
horough understanding of mortgage underwriting principles.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and assess loan applications for conventional mortgages, including borro
wer income, assets, employment history, credit reports, and overall financial stabi
lity.
- Ensure compliance with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and other conventional mortg
age guidelines, as well as federal and state lending regulations.
- Analyze documentation for accuracy, completeness, and consistency, identifying
any discrepancies or potential risk factors.
- Make sound underwriting determinations, including loan approvals, conditional a
pprovals, or denials based on standardized guidelines.
- Communicate with loan officers, processors, and other stakeholders to request a
dditional documentation or clarify application details.
- Maintain accurate records of underwriting decisions and provide detailed docume
ntation of loan files.
- Support internal audits and quality control processes to ensure compliance and
minimal risk exposure.
- Stay updated on changes in mortgage regulations, conventional loan programs,
and industry best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in finance, business, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent
work experience may be considered.
- Minimum of 25 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, specifically with U
S conventional loans.
- Strong knowledge of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac underwriting guidelines.
- Proficiency with mortgage loan origination systems (LOS) and automated underw
riting systems (AUS).
- Excellent analytical skills with attention to detail and strong decision-
making capabilities.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple loan files under tight deadline
s.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with team members
, clients, and auditors.
Working Conditions
- Full-time position, often in an office or remote setup.
- May require managing a high volume of loan files with strict timelines.
Job Description
As a Non-
QM DSCR Underwriter, you will be responsible for the comprehensive analysis and eval
uation of residential mortgage loan applications outside of standard agency guidelines (
Non-
QM), including Debt Service Coverage Ratio (DSCR) products. You will ensure loans c
omply with company and private investor guidelines while minimizing risk exposure. The
ideal candidate demonstrates robust analytic skills, attention to detail, and the ability to
make sound underwriting decisions in a fast-paced wholesale mortgage environment.
Key Responsibilities
• Review and underwrite Non-
QM and DSCR mortgage loans, including alternative documentation products such a
s asset depletion, bank statement, ITIN, 1099, and P&L; only loans.
•
Analyze borrower credit, income, assets, and collateral to determine eligibility an
d risk.
•
Ensure loans meet investor and company guidelines, including regulatory and co
mpliance standards (ATR/QM, TRID, RESPA, TILA, HMDA, HOEPA).
•
Perform manual underwriting and provide recommendations for underwriting wai
vers or eligibility exceptions.
•
Issue clear and compliant loan decisions and promptly review resubmitted docum
entation.
• Respond to loan audits and post-closing requests for additional documentation.
•
Collaborate with Account Executives, brokers, processors, and internal teams to
ensure timely and accurate loan processing.
• Stay current with Non-
QM product offerings, investor guidelines, and secondary market changes.
•
Contribute to process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, service level
s, and loan quality.
Qualifications
• Experience: 2+ years current experience underwriting Non-
QM mortgage loans, specifically DSCR products
•
Profound knowledge of NonQM loan programs and alternative documentation re
quirements.
•
Ability to perform complex income and risk analyses, including DSCR calculation
s.
• Strong understanding of secondary market requirements and investor guidelines.
•
Proficiency with automated underwriting systems (DU, LP) and electronic docum
ent management systems.
• Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration.
• High attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-
paced environment.
- Collaborative interaction with loan officers, processors, managers, and auditors is
essential.
