Role of Scrub Nurse Purpose:

To maintain/ensure a sterile surgical field and cleanliness of setting

The scrub nurse and the circulator work together in co-ordination to accomplish the task necessary to achieve a common goal in OT

To promote safety and welfare of every patient

To assist the surgeon.

To assist the surgical team and scrub nurse

Prior to surgery:

Check surgeons preference and collect special equipments, sutures and instruments etc accordingly

Performs scrubbing, gowning, gloving according to OT policies.

Drapes trolley and bowl stand with sterile pre pack set.

Checks along with the circulator the contents of each instrument set as per the enclosed list

Collects from circulator sutures, needles, blades and necessary sterile equipments

6. Checks swabs, packs, instruments and needles with circulator

7. Ensure that the findings are chartered and displayed on the count record sheet

8. Drapes mayo table and prepare initially required instruments.

9. Confirms the circulator for identity of correct patient, with ID band, indoor paper and OT list

10. Ensure that patient is positioned safely

11. Prepare mayo table with following items; - scalp, dissecting scissor small artery forceps, toothed and non-toothed dissecting forceps, diathermy cord with pencil.

At the commencement of the surgery:

1. Assists for skin preparation by providing sponges on sponge holder to surgeon

2. Assists in applying drapes

3. Passes towel clips to the surgeon

4. Position the mayo table

5. Hands over diathermy cord and suction tubing s to circulator or OT attendant for the attachment and checks diathermy setting with surgeon

During surgery:

1.



Hands over sponges to the surgeon and assistant surgeon

2. Passes instruments sponge s sutures as needed, and replace instruments on mayo table from the trolley as operation proceeds.

3. Keeps accurate count of extra sponges, needles OR instruments collected during the operation.

4. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by continuous observation of progress of operation.

5. Ensure that the noise movement in the theater is kept to a minimum

6. Ensure that a sterile field is maintained throughout the surgery.

7. Before the surgeon closes the cavity, the scrub nurse check sponges, instruments, and needles in accordance with theater policy, informs finding to be surgeon.

8. Checked with the circulator for availability of appropriate wound dressing. Collects dressing from the circulator hands it over to surgeon.

9. Hands over specimen to the circulator if needed.

10. Removes instrument from mayo trolley.

11. Removes blade from the handles disposes of sharp container.

12. Removes drapes from patient.

13. Ensure that the area around the dressing is clean dry clothes the patient

After surgery:

1. Cover the patient with clean sheet.

2. Removes scrub nurse gown gloves.

3. As when permitted by the anesthetist, shift patient from OT table to trolley.

4.



Accompanies the patient to recovery room gives all relevant information to the recovery nurse.

5. Completes entry in the case register, charge sheet.

6. Informs the concerned ward nursing staff

7. Check the instruments other equipments.

Role of Circulatory nurse Prior to surgery:

- Checks that the OT is clean. Ensure that suction apparatus, diathermy and operating table for proper working condition.
- Lights are in working condition
- Collects necessary stock and equipment needed for surgery
- Assists in tying gowns and open sterile gloves.
- Open instrument pack and bowl pack and other necessary equipment for the scrub nurse
- Assist with count and record

During surgery:
- Remains in OT throughout procedure
- Connects suction and diathermy leads to machine
- Replenishes and records sponges and packs as requested
- Adheres strictly to theatre policy for disposal of used sponges
- Helps in adjustment of OT lights
- Ensure that all doors remains closed
- Anticipates requirements of the surgical team
- Assists with counts and records as needed
- Prepares dressings for surgical wound s
- Collects the specimen in appropriate container and labels it correctly

On completion of surgery:
- Hands over dressing to the scrub nurse
- Helps anesthetic if needed
- Helps with removal of drapes and preparation of patient for return to recovery room
- Help the scrub nurse
- Ensure that OT room is ready for next case
