Total Experience: 8+ Years
Contract: 12+ months
Position: Senior Software Development Engineer in Test
Role & responsibilities
We are seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test to lead automation initiatives across our digital commerce and hospitality platform. This is a hands-on engineering role you will design frameworks, write production-grade automation code, and integrate quality gates directly into CI/CD pipelines. You will work embedded within agile squads, partnering daily with developers, product owners, and architects to shift quality left and ship with confidence.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in Playwright-based UI automation and API test design, a pragmatic mindset for framework architecture, and the collaborative instincts to elevate the broader engineering team. You are comfortable owning a coverage domain end-to-end from test strategy to CI dashboards to Jira traceability.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
UI Automation Playwright / TypeScript
- Architect, build, and maintain scalable end-to-end test suites using Playwright (TypeScript) across web applications serving millions of users
- Design and enforce Page Object Model (POM) and component-based patterns, keeping tests decoupled from implementation details
- Manage test worker concurrency, browser context isolation, and parallel execution strategies to maximize CI throughput
- Implement smart waiting strategies and resilient selectors to eliminate flakiness at scale
- Integrate visual regression checkpoints using screenshot comparison where appropriate
API Automation — Python / pytest
- Design and grow REST, GraphQL, and SOAP API test suites using Python/pytest with clean fixture patterns and reusable client abstractions
- Build GraphQL schema validation tests and operation-level assertion libraries
- Implement SLA and performance assertion layers to catch regression before production
- Develop parameterized data-driven test suites that cover edge cases without test explosion
- Maintain Postman/Newman collections for contract-level smoke verification in CI
CI/CD Integration & Quality Gates
- Build and maintain Jenkins pipelines for automated test execution across environments (aws-test, aws-stage, ship-test, ship-stage)
- Define and enforce test tier tagging strategy (smoke sanity functional regression)
aligned to deployment environment promotion gates
- Implement fail-fast gates for smoke suites blocking deployments and async deeper suites reporting post-deploy
- Maintain test execution dashboards and trend reports visible to the broader engineering org
- Own flake detection and remediation workflows — zero tolerance for non-deterministic tests in main pipelines
Mock Services & Contract Testing
- Design and maintain WireMock stubs as the authoritative mock layer for dependent microservice behavior
- Keep stubs in sync with actual service contracts; flag drift as a quality gate failure
- Collaborate with service teams to define and test consumer-driven contracts
- Support local development environments with mock-first test data strategies
Architecture & Standards
- Define and document automation standards — naming conventions, folder structure, assertion patterns, error messaging — adopted org-wide
- Lead design reviews for new test frameworks and tooling proposals
- Conduct automation code reviews, providing constructive, standards-driven feedback
- Evaluate emerging tools (Cypress, k6, Gatling) and make evidence-based adoption recommendations
- Build shared utilities, fixtures, and data builder patterns reused across squads
Mentorship & Cross-Team Collaboration
- Mentor junior and mid-level SDETs through pairing, code reviews, and structured growth plans
- Embed with feature squads to advise on testability during design — not just execution
- Partner with DevOps on infrastructure for parallelized test execution and artifact management
- Drive Jira ticket-to-test traceability, ensuring automation coverage is visible in project reporting
- Present automation health metrics and coverage gap analyses to engineering leadership
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience
- 5+ years in software quality engineering in an SDET, Automation Engineer, or QA Engineer role
- 2+ years writing production Playwright automation at scale — not just scripts, but maintainable frameworks used by teams
- 3+ years of API test automation — REST required; GraphQL and/or SOAP strongly preferred
- Experience owning automation for a complex, distributed web application (microservices architecture)
- Track record of building automation from the ground up, not just maintaining inherited suites
Technical Skills
- TypeScript, browser context management, fixtures, workers, custom reporter integration Playwright:
- pytest, conftest patterns, fixture scoping, parametrize, custom plugins Python:
- REST assertions, GraphQL query/mutation/schema testing, SOAP/WSDL API Testing:
- Jenkins pipeline authoring, GitHub Actions, artifact management, test result publishing CI/CD:
- WireMock (stub design, request matching, scenario stateful mocking) or equivalent Mocking:
- POM, data builder pattern, AAA structure, test isolation principles Test Architecture:
- Git — branching strategies, PR workflows, pre-commit hooks Version Control:
- Jira — test case linking, coverage tracking, sprint-level reporting Test Management:
Soft Skills
- Communicates technical tradeoffs clearly to non-technical stakeholders
- Proactively identifies coverage gaps without waiting to be told
- Comfortable disagreeing constructively and backing positions with data
- Self-directed — owns deliverables end-to-end without hand-holding
- Operates well in ambiguity; can define the problem before solving it
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience migrating Java/Selenium test suites to Playwright — you understand the delta
- Background in Java with Maven or Gradle and TestNG or JUnit
- Familiarity with Spring Boot microservices and how service mesh affects test design
- Performance/load testing baseline knowledge (k6, Gatling, or Locust)
- Exposure to observability tooling (distributed tracing, log correlation) to support test debugging
- Experience with test data management strategies in multi-setting setups
- ISTQB Advanced or equivalent certification (valued but not required)
- Hospitality, e-commerce, or booking-platform domain experience
