About the Role
We are looking for a Process Engineer to support process engineering delivery across CRA's product portfolio - combustion systems, biogas processing, and gas compression. You will work under the Process Engineering Lead, producing calculations, drawings, and documentation that feed into the design basis for live projects. This is a hands-on, learning-intensive role suited to someone early in their process engineering career who wants direct exposure across multiple product lines rather than a single narrow specialisation.
Across All Product Lines
- Support the Team in developing design basis documents, mass and energy balances, process flow diagrams, and PIDs.
- Perform routine process calculations under supervision: stoichiometry, air/fuel ratio, pressure drop, heat release, residence time.
- Prepare and maintain line lists, equipment lists, and process datasheets for bought-out equipment.
- Assist in drafting control philosophy inputs, operating sequences, and interlock/trip condition documentation.
- Coordinate with the Design/Drafting team to ensure PIDs and process documents stay aligned through revisions.
- Participate in internal HAZOP sessions as a supporting team member, capturing actions and follow-ups.
- Support proposal preparation with preliminary sizing calculations and standards references.
- Assist with reviewing mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation outputs for consistency with the design basis, flagging discrepancies to the Team.
Combustion (Flares, Thermal Oxidisers, VCUs, BMS)
- Support combustion chamber sizing calculations: residence time, heat intensity, temperature profile.
- Assist with flare radiation and stack height calculations under guidance (API 521 basis).
- Support burner selection data-gathering: fuel flexibility, turndown ratio requirements.
- Assist in compiling emission calculation inputs (NOx, CO, VOC destruction efficiency).
Biogas Processing Upgrading
- Assist in biogas characterisation data review (CH4/CO2/H2S/moisture) for incoming project inputs
- Support sizing calculations for gas treatment steps (H2S removal, dehydration, CO2 removal) under supervision
- Assist with CBG plant process documentation and quality-compliance checks (IS 16087 or applicable standard).
Gas Compression Processing Skids
- Support compressor sizing calculations: flow, pressure ratio, stage count, intercooling, under the Leads review.
- Assist in preparing skid process documentation: scrubbers, separators, coolers, control valves, relief devices.
- Prepare process datasheets for bought-out equipment (compressors, heat exchangers, vessels) for Lead review.
Requirements
- Degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
- 1-3 years of process engineering experience in equipment design, EPC, internship/project experience producing process calculations or documentation is acceptable for candidates at the lower end of this range.
- Basic working knowledge of process engineering fundamentals: mass/energy balances, fluid flow, heat transfer.
- Comfortable working with PIDs and process flow diagrams, and willing to learn plant-specific conventions.
- Solid numerical and analytical skills; comfortable with detailed calculations and documentation.
- Eagerness to learn across multiple product lines (combustion, biogas, gas compression) rather than a single narrow specialisation.
Preferred
- Exposure to combustion or gas processing coursework, projects, or internships.
- Familiarity with process simulation tools (Aspen HYSYS, ProMax, or similar) at an academic or working level.
- Basic awareness of relevant standards: API 521, NFPA 86 or EN 746, ASME/IS codes for pressure equipment.
- Prior exposure to an equipment OEM or manufacturing environment.
