About BigFM & The Role

BigFM is building a media super-app bringing together video, audio, radio, micro-drama, news, and commerce onto a single, seamless platform. We are looking for a Backend Architect to own the overarching technical architecture for our backend platformspanning 22+ microservices across content, discovery, commerce, and platform APIs.

This is a foundational, individual-contributor technical leadership role. You will define how a single backend platform scales to serve six content and commerce verticals, setting the technical vision, standards, and execution strategy that the wider Backend Engineering team will build against.

Key Responsibilities

- Architecture & Vision: Define and own the backend technical architecture across core platform, content & discovery, commerce & growth, and platform services.
- Core Service Ownership: Architect mission-critical services including authentication, user profiles, feed generation, recommendations, search, and content delivery APIs.
- Standards & Guardrails: Establish engineering standards, code quality bars, design principles, and architectural guardrails across the backend organization.
- Technical Decision-Making: Drive foundational technical strategy—service boundaries, data modeling, API contracts, caching mechanisms, and scalability models—ensuring coherence as new verticals onboard.
- Security & Infrastructure Strategy: Define application-level security standards (auth/authz, encryption, data protection) and deployment/release architectures in close partnership with the Platform Engineering team.
- Cross-Functional Alignment: Partner with the Frontend Architect, Platform Engineer, and Tech Lead to define clean API contracts, resolve technical integration points, and translate architecture into deliverable roadmaps.
- Quality & Scalability: Conduct architecture and code reviews for high-impact changes,



while directly owning technical debt mitigation, system performance, and long-term scalability.
- Technology Evaluation: Evaluate and integrate modern backend tools and technologies that meaningfully improve developer velocity, platform stability, or cost efficiency.

Required Qualifications

- 8–10 years of overall backend engineering experience, with at least 2–3 years in a formal Architecture or Staff/Principal Engineering capacity.
- Deep, hands-on expertise designing, building, and scaling distributed backend systems and RESTful/GraphQL APIs.
- Proven track record architecting backend platforms that power multiple products or business verticals from shared core services.
- Hands-on proficiency with major cloud providers (GCP, AWS, or Azure) for deploying and running high-availability production environments.
- Strong expertise in at least one contemporary backend programming language used at scale (Go, Java, Node.js, or Python).
- Solid understanding of modern security best practices (OAuth2, JWT, secure API design, data protection at rest and in transit).
- Working knowledge of cloud-native deployment tools: Kubernetes, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Deep mastery of data modeling (SQL/NoSQL), caching strategies (Redis, Memcached), service decomposition, and trade-offs in high read/write throughput environments.
- Ability to drive execution through technical authority, clear documentation, and peer influence in an IC capacity.

Preferred Qualifications

- Prior experience in a media, OTT, streaming, or commerce super-app environment.
- Demonstrated experience building 01 platforms within high-growth tech startups.
- Familiarity with recommendation engines, enterprise search infrastructure (Elasticsearch, OpenSearch), or large-scale content delivery networks (CDNs).
- Specialized expertise in GCP cloud-native architecture and advanced microservice design patterns.
