About the Role
Western Alliance Logistics (WAL) is seeking an experienced General Manager Global Freight Operations (Ocean & Air) to establish and lead its international freight operations from India.
This is a strategic support and execution role responsible for planning, procuring, coordinating, and optimizing global freight movements for business generated by WAL's commercial team in Montreal, Canada.
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering responsive, cost-effective, and reliable freight solutions through a strong global network of shipping lines, airlines, freight forwarders, NVOCCs, and overseas agents. Speed of execution, operational excellence, and customer responsiveness are fundamental to this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead WAL's Global Freight Operations from India, supporting the commercial team based in Montreal, Canada.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for all international ocean and air freight activities.
- Manage end-to-end international freight operations involving:
- Ocean Freight (FCL & LCL)
- Air Freight
- Break Bulk Cargo
- Project Cargo
- Heavy Lift & Specialized Cargo
- Develop and maintain a strong global network of shipping lines, airlines, freight forwarders, NVOCCs, overseas agents, and logistics partners across India, China, the Far East, North America, Latin America, and Europe.
- Negotiate competitive freight rates, carrier contracts, and service agreements while ensuring optimal service quality.
- Plan and execute freight movements with a strong focus on cost optimization, transit-time reduction, and operational efficiency, particularly for shipments moving from Asia to North America and Latin America.
- Support the Montreal commercial team by providing timely freight quotations, routing options, shipment visibility, and operational expertise.
- Ensure real-time responsiveness to quotation requests, shipment updates, operational escalations, and customer requirements where speed of execution is critical.
- Monitor shipments proactively and resolve operational challenges before they impact customers.
- Ensure compliance with international trade regulations, customs requirements, Incoterms 2020, and export/import documentation.
- Evaluate carrier performance and implement continuous improvements in freight procurement and logistics operations.
- Establish scalable freight processes and best practices to support the company's continued global growth.
Desired Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate should possess:
- 1520 years of progressive experience in international freight forwarding and global logistics.
- Extensive hands-on expertise in both ocean and air freight operations.
- Thorough knowledge of:
- Full Container Load (FCL)
- Less than Container Load (LCL)
- Break Bulk Cargo
- Project Cargo
- Heavy Lift & Specialized Cargo
- Significant experience managing freight movements from Asia to North America and Latin America with demonstrated success in optimizing freight costs and transit times.
- A well-established professional network of shipping lines, airlines, freight forwarders, NVOCCs, and overseas agents across India, China, the Far East, North America, Latin America, and Europe.
- Robust commercial negotiation and carrier management skills.
- Excellent communication, planning, and stakeholder management abilities.
- Proven ability to work effectively across multiple time zones in a fast-paced global environment.

Leadership Responsibilities
- This role will initially function as an individual contributor responsible for establishing best-in-class freight operations and developing a robust global logistics network.
As the business expands, the incumbent will be expected to:
- Recruit, build, mentor, and lead a high-performing International Freight Operations team based in India.
- Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and operational best practices.
- Foster a culture of responsiveness, accountability, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Drive automation, process optimization, and operational efficiencies across the global freight function.
- Work closely with the commercial team in Montreal to ensure seamless coordination between customer commitments and operational execution.
