Job Description -
L4 Systems Administrator/Engineer Service Rail
The L4 Systems Administrator/Engineer is the senior technical lead for the Service Rail program. This role owns the most complex issues in the environment through to resolution, drives architecture and design decisions, and serves as the primary technical interface with customer cybersecurity stakeholders. Operating within a heavily regulated enterprise environment, the L4 engineer sets the standard for problem ownership carrying issues from identification through resolution without handoff gaps while continuously improving the team's operational capabilities through automation and up-to-date tooling.
Responsibilities
- The L4 engineer owns all escalations from L3 through to resolution, including complex application failures, remote access platform outages, endpoint protection conflicts, and logging platform issues requiring deep-dive root cause analysis. The role supports and contributes to the remote access and secure access stack at a design level including Zscaler and related platforms evaluating configurations, driving improvements, and ensuring the environment meets security and operational requirements across all supported geographies.
- The L4 engineer supports SolarWinds and logging platforms in coordination with the broader monitoring team contributing to alerting design, dashboard configuration, and integration with downstream security and operations workflows. The role supports identity and access management operations including PingID and equivalent MFA and SSO platforms, and contributes to PKI and certificate infrastructure including certificate authority integrations, renewal processes,
and certificate-related incident resolution working in partnership with the teams that share responsibility for those platforms. The L4 engineer engages with network teams on Cisco ISE policy and access control issues, leading joint troubleshooting on complex problems and driving configuration changes through proper change control.
- The L4 engineer identifies, designs, and implements automation across the environment — scripting and tooling that reduces manual effort, accelerates incident response, and enforces consistency across sites. This includes automation of patching workflows, configuration management, monitoring responses, and onboarding and offboarding processes. The role contributes to the team's cloud operational posture within AWS — supporting infrastructure components, access controls, and ensuring cloud-hosted services meet regulatory and security baselines. The L4 engineer contributes to SaaS platform governance including integration design, access policy, and vendor engagement across the application portfolio.
- The L4 engineer contributes to DR planning for the Service Rail environment — participating in strategy development, driving tabletop and live DR exercises, maintaining runbooks, and ensuring recovery objectives are documented and achievable. The role produces and presents operational reporting to leadership and customer stakeholders,
including service health, incident trends, SLA performance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- The L4 engineer leads ITIL process execution at a senior level: managing major incidents, chairing problem management reviews, authoring and approving change requests, and ensuring the team's operational posture stays aligned with defined service levels. The role works directly with customer cybersecurity teams — translating technical findings into risk language, supporting compliance and audit activities, and participating in security reviews across multiple regulatory jurisdictions. Requirements vary by country; the L4 engineer adapts documentation, controls, and processes accordingly.
- When infrastructure issues arise — network, firewall, OpenShift, or Dell platform — the L4 engineer leads joint troubleshooting, engages the right teams and vendors, and drives resolution. The role participates actively in architecture review sessions, contributes to design decisions, and documents outcomes in runbooks and knowledge base articles that support the broader team.
- Supported sites span multiple countries across different time zones. The L4 engineer provides coverage aligned to global site business hours and leads or participates in maintenance windows outside standard working hours. The role requires scheduling flexibility and the ability to coordinate cross-geography activities across a distributed team.
- The L4 engineer mentors and technically directs L3 staff, identifies skill gaps, and builds team capability over time.
