Role & responsibilities

- Develop, implement, and monitor excavation safety procedures in accordance with statutory regulations, client requirements, and company HSE standards.
- Conduct pre-excavation risk assessments, Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Hazard Identification (HAZID), and review Method Statements (MS) before work begins.
- Ensure implementation of the Permit to Work (PTW) system for all excavation and trenching activities.
- Verify underground utility clearance by coordinating with engineering and utility departments to identify existing electrical cables, gas pipelines, water lines, sewer lines, and communication cables before excavation.
- Inspect excavation areas daily to ensure soil stability and recommend appropriate protective systems such as sloping, benching, shoring, or trench boxes.
- Monitor deep excavations and trenches to prevent cave-ins, ground collapse, flooding, and other excavation-related hazards.
- Ensure safe access and egress using ladders, ramps,



or stairways in all excavation work areas.
- Verify proper barricading, warning signage, lighting, edge protection, and traffic management around excavation zones.
- Supervise the safe operation of excavators, backhoe loaders, cranes, dumpers, and other earthmoving equipment.
- Ensure spoil materials, equipment, and heavy vehicles are maintained at a safe distance from excavation edges.
- Monitor atmospheric testing and ventilation where excavations may contain hazardous gases or oxygen-deficient conditions.
- Coordinate with civil, mechanical, electrical, utility, and contractor teams to ensure safe planning and execution of excavation activities.
- Conduct daily toolbox talks and safety briefings on excavation hazards, trench safety, emergency procedures, and secure work practices.
