Job PurposeThe Junior Research Associate will operate, maintain, and analyze results from advanced material characterisation instrumentsspecifically XRD, SEM, and BET surface area analyzers. This role supports the development of next-generation battery minerals (e.g., lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, graphite) by providing precise structural,

morphological, and surface area data.

Key ResponsibilitiesInstrument

Operation & Sample Preparation

- Prepare mineral samples, using proper grinding, mounting, coating, and degassing techniques.
- Operate X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analyzers independently.
- Calibrate and maintain analytical instruments daily to guarantee data accuracy and reproducibility.

Data Analysis & Interpretation

- Analyze XRD data for phase identification, crystallinity, and lattice parameters using software like HighScore Plus or Match!.
- Interpret SEM micrographs to analyze particle morphology, particle size distribution, and surface coatings.
- Evaluate BET isotherms to determine specific surface area (SSA), pore size distribution, and pore volume.




- Correlate characterisation data with electrochemical performance trends observed by the battery synthesis team.

Documentation & Lab Safety

- Compile detailed, well-structured technical reports, data sheets, and presentations for senior scientists.
- Maintain accurate electronic and physical lab notebooks containing raw data, instrument parameters, and sample logs.
- Strictly follow laboratory safety protocols, especially when handling hazardous battery chemicals, nanomaterials, and high-pressure gases.

Qualifications & Requirements

- Education: Master’s degree (M.Sc. / M.Tech) in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or Chemical Engineering.
- Technical Experience: 2 to 4 years of hands-on experience in a materials research or characterisation lab, specifically focusing on XRD, SEM, and BET.

- Domain Knowledge: Solid foundational understanding of solid-state chemistry, powder metallurgy, or battery chemistry (lithium-ion or next-gen chemistries).

- Soft Skills: Strong analytical problem-solving skills, high attention to detail, and a team-oriented team mindset.
