Hands-on Mainframe DB2 System Programmer SME responsible for system-level installation, configuration, and sustainment of DB2 on z/OS across monoplex and SYSPLEX data sharing environments. The role focuses on deep diagnostics, performance tuning, backup/recovery engineering, and DB2 subsystem lifecycle management, producing clear documentation and diagrams for hand-offs. You will drive migrations and maintenance (DB2 V9V11), health checks, security hardening, and patch management using SMP/E. Close collaboration with application, CICS/IMS, storage, and infrastructure teams is expected, along with vendor engagement for PMR/case handling. This is a 90-day engagement aligned to a 17:30 IST–2:20 AM IST shift to support client needs.

Required Qualifications

- 14+ years of Mainframe DB2 system programming on z/OS
- Expertise in monoplex and SYSPLEX (Parallel Sysplex) architecture with DB2 data sharing
- DB2 subsystem setup and configuration (stand-alone and data sharing groups)
- DB2 data sharing skills: installation, customization, DB2 structures, CFRM policy, DB2 CF recovery, data sharing locking mechanisms
- Backup and recovery engineering: image copy, FlashCopy, mirroring, BACKUP/RESTORE SYSTEM, PIT recovery
- Scripting and tooling: REXX, CLIST, ISPF panels/utilities
- Robust knowledge of transactional environments and interfaces: CICS, IMS with DB2
- SMP/E packaging and maintenance processes (RECEIVE, APPLY CHECK, HOLDDATA, ACCEPT)
- Software migration and maintenance procedures across DB2 V9, V10, and V11 (CM/ENFM/NFM), fallback/backout/re-migration
- DB2 health checks, security hardening, separation of duties, and patch management
- Operational monitoring and analysis using DB2 traces, SMF, RMF, and WLM




- z/OS and DB2 system performance tuning (buffer pools, group buffer pools, logging, DDF, WLM)
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field
- Good-to-have: DB2 Connect and IBM Data Studio
- Good-to-have: DB2 cloning processes (IBM DB2 Cloning Tool or custom utility-based cloning)
- Experience with problem debugging and vendor PMR/case procedures
- Ability to work 17:30 IST–2:20 AM IST shift for 90 days

Responsibilities

- Own DB2 on z/OS subsystem installations, configurations, and upgrades in stand-alone and data sharing (SYSPLEX) environments
- Engineer and document backup/recovery strategies (image copy, FlashCopy, mirroring, BACKUP/RESTORE SYSTEM) and execute recoveries including PIT scenarios
- Design, configure, and tune data sharing structures (CFRM policies, group buffer pools), and handle DB2 CF failure/recovery
- Drive software migration and maintenance for DB2 V9–V11 via SMP/E, including APPLY/ACCEPT, HOLDDATA resolution, backout/re-migration plans
- Perform health checks, security hardening, and patch management; maintain separation of duties and RACF/DB2 privilege models
- Monitor and tune z/OS and DB2 performance using DB2 traces, SMF/RMF data, and WLM classification; optimize buffer pools, DDF, logging, and EDM/RID pools
- Automate operational tasks using REXX/CLIST/ISPF; build utilities and job flows to improve reliability
- Support and troubleshoot CICS/IMS to DB2 interfaces; optimize thread management and protected threads
- Create high-quality runbooks, diagrams, and hand-off documentation; collaborate across infra, storage, and app teams
- Engage with IBM/vendor via PMR/case processes for complex issues; provide on-shift coverage (17:30 IST–2:20 AM IST) for client support
