Job Summary
The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) is responsible for providing round-the-clock medical care to inpatients, emergency patients, and patients under observation. The RMO performs initial patient assessment, stabilizes emergency cases, coordinates with consultants, maintains accurate medical records, and ensures adherence to hospital clinical protocols, NABH standards, patient safety goals, and ethical medical practices.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patient Care
- Assess and examine patients in OPD, IPD, Emergency, and ICU (as assigned).
- Provide immediate medical management and stabilization of emergency cases.
- Monitor admitted patients and record clinical progress.
- Prescribe treatment within the scope of hospital policies and under consultant supervision where applicable.
- Ensure continuity of patient care during duty shifts.
2. Emergency Services
- Attend all medical and surgical emergencies.
- Perform Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required.
- Stabilize critically ill patients before referral or consultant intervention.
- Coordinate emergency admissions and referrals.
3. Consultant Coordination
- Inform consultants promptly about patient condition changes.
- Assist consultants during patient examination, procedures, and rounds.
- Implement consultant treatment plans.
- Maintain effective communication with all specialties.
4. Clinical Documentation
- Maintain complete and accurate medical records.
- Document history, examination findings, diagnosis, treatment, progress notes, consent, discharge summaries, and death summaries (where applicable).
- Ensure timely and legible documentation in the Hospital Information System (HIS).
5. Patient Monitoring
- Conduct regular ward rounds.
- Monitor vital signs and laboratory investigations.
- Review treatment response.
- Escalate deteriorating patient conditions immediately.
6. Coordination with Departments
Coordinate with:
- Nursing Services
- ICU
- Operation Theatre
- Laboratory
- Radiology
- Pharmacy
- Blood Bank
- MRD
- Billing
- Quality Department
- Administration
7. Infection Prevention & Patient Safety
- Follow infection prevention and control protocols.
- Ensure hand hygiene and PPE compliance.
- Report adverse events, medication errors, and patient safety incidents.
- Participate in patient safety initiatives.
8. Medico-Legal Responsibilities
- Manage Medico-Legal Cases (MLCs) according to hospital policy.
- Prepare accurate medico-legal documentation.
- Inform police authorities when required.
- Maintain confidentiality and legal compliance.
9. NABH & Quality Compliance
- Comply with NABH standards and hospital clinical protocols.
- Participate in clinical audits, mortality and morbidity meetings, and quality improvement activities.
- Follow patient identification, medication safety, consent, and documentation standards.
10. Training & Continuous Education
- Participate in CMEs, workshops, mock drills, and mandatory hospital training.
- Maintain BLS/ACLS certification.
- Support clinical teaching and orientation of junior staff when assigned.
Qualifications
Essential
- MBBS /BAMS from a recognized medical college.
- Valid State Medical Council Registration.
Preferred
- BLS & ACLS Certification.
- Fellowship or additional certifications in Emergency Medicine/Critical Care (desirable).
Experience
- 05 years of clinical experience.
- Fresh MBBS graduates with valid registration may be considered.
- Experience in Emergency Medicine, ICU, or multi-specialty hospitals is preferred.
