Job Description New Product Development (NPD) Engineer – Tooling Background

Position: New Product Development Engineer

Department: Product Development / Engineering

Purpose of the Role:

Responsible for developing current automotive products from concept to mass production by coordinating design, tooling, manufacturing, quality, and customer requirements. The role focuses on ensuring robust product and tooling development, timely project execution, and successful product launch.

Key Responsibilities

Product Development

* Lead new product development activities from RFQ, design review, prototype, tooling, validation, and mass production stages.

* Review product designs for manufacturability, assembly feasibility, quality, and cost optimization.

* Coordinate with product design teams to ensure tooling-friendly part designs.

* Support engineering changes, design modifications, and product improvements.

Tooling Development

* Define tooling concepts and specifications based on product requirements.

* Review mold/tool designs and ensure compliance with quality and manufacturing requirements.

* Monitor tooling manufacturing progress, trials, modifications, and approvals.

* Lead tool tryouts, tuning activities, and process optimization.

* Troubleshoot tooling-related issues and implement corrective actions.

Project Management

* Prepare and maintain project timelines and milestone plans.

* Coordinate with customers, suppliers, manufacturing, quality, and purchasing teams.

* Track project risks and ensure timely closure of issues.

* Support APQP activities and customer milestone requirements.

Quality & Validation

* Lead DFMEA, PFMEA, DFM, and Design Review activities.

* Support prototype builds, DV/PV testing, and validation activities.





* Ensure compliance with customer specifications and automotive quality standards.

* Support PPAP preparation and production readiness reviews.

Manufacturing Support

* Coordinate production trial runs and process capability improvements.

* Ensure smooth transition from development to mass production.

* Drive productivity, quality, and cost improvement initiatives.

Required Skills

* Strong knowledge of injection molds, stamping tools, fixtures, and tooling processes.

* Understanding of automotive product development processes (APQP, PPAP, FMEA, Control Plan).

* Experience in tooling trials, tuning, and process optimization.

* Knowledge of plastic and/or sheet metal component manufacturing.

* Ability to interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.;

* Proficiency in CAD software such as CATIA V5, Siemens NX, or Creo Parametric.

* Strong project management and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Experience

* Automotive interior and exterior component development.

* Tool development and launch support experience.

* Customer interaction experience with OEMs or Tier-1 suppliers.

* Experience in prototype, DV, PV, and production launch activities.

Qualifications

* Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Tool Engineering, or Automobile Engineering.

* 5–12 years of experience in automotive product development and tooling engineering.
